Best HRT after Mirena removal

beany75 · 12/01/2021 18:49

I'm 51 and having had my Mirena coil for 4.5 years I'm due to have it removed this week. I had it as my periods became too too heavy but then had menopause symptoms so started oestrogen only HRT tablets alongside it (Premarin) two years ago.
I need to start new HRT treatment but
A) I don't know if I'm yet through my menopause and
B) I'm wondering what is the best HRT to go on after having a Mirena coil?
Unfortunately my GP is ancient and useless - she has told me to look on the internet and tell her what I want!!! The Mirena was fitted by a private gynae but as I have now been made redundant that is off the cards sadly
Any advice appreciated - TIA :)

Why are you habit it removed after only 4.5 years? Although it’s supposed to be replaced after 5 years, it’s actually effective for up to 7

I'm 49 and I've just had my Mirena replaced with another one and I've started using eostrogel. My GP said it was a very popular way of delivering both hormones effectively. I got on really with with the mirena and the gel is easy to use.

My GP has told me that when using Mirena as part of HRT that it shouls be removed after 4 years - if just for contraception can stay in for 5 years..?

There seems to be so much conflicting advice out there - I suggested to my GP that maybe I should have another coil fitted but she is not keen at all - I too have got on very well with it and am worried chaging everything will cause problems..

so why don't you get a 2nd Mirena as HRT?

It's a very popular type of HRt- the Mirena and estrogen gel or an estrogen patch.

ask for it.

not sure why your GP 'isn't keen' - it's your choice, not hers! stand up for yourself :)

the lifespan of the mirena as part of hrt is 4 years.

ps

You also need to get off Premarin- it's outdated and no one prescribes that now. There are many more body identical types of estrogen around on the NHS.

Ah I see-I wasn’t aware of that, so thank you. Looks like I’ll be getting mine placed sooner rather than later too!
