Refused HRT

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 07/01/2021 19:56

I finally got together the courage to ask my GP for HRT. Even though I have many symptoms he refused because my periods are still regular even though I said they were heavier and more painful. Is this right or should I try a different doctor.

See another dr. He's being ridiculous and worse, doesn't even know the basics of menopaise and HRT.

There are 2 main typesof hrt

1 for women with periods still
2 for women with no periods or very few

If you get nowhere, you can also see a private menopause specialist who won't give you this nonsense. fees are around £250 for the 1st appt and you would need a check up ( lower cost).

JinglingHellsBells · 07/01/2021 20:11

.. an annual checkup or your GP might agree to take over the prescriptions

Aquamarine1029 · 07/01/2021 20:14

Your gp has no idea what they're talking about, which sadly is not unusual when it comes to gp's and their knowledge about peri/menopause. I went private after being fobbed off multiple times.

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 07/01/2021 20:14

Thank you so much. It just seemed to make no sense as he said many my symptoms were in line with perimenopause and my age 46 was also an indication then as soon as I said I was regular that was it. I am really struggling with the anxiety and mood swings so was hoping to get it sorted out

I will try another doctor and if no luck will go private as this is no way to live

He did offer me an online course to help me deal with the anxiety which I will follow through with

You would think that seeing as every woman eventually goes through this it wouldn’t be this difficult

Absolutely see another GP

I was told the same by a male GP but the symptoms of perimenopause became more and more unbearable and I went back and asked for a different GP

Started patches 3 weeks ago and my brain fog seems to be lifting a bit already. I'm 48yrs and have struggled for about 5 yrs now.

JinglingHellsBells · 07/01/2021 20:28

I despair really.

No one should need struggle like this to get a treatment when they are suffering.

I'd been seeing a gynae/meno expert for around 18 months for other reasons and when I was almost 53 I was having bad flushes and insomnia.

I asked if I could try HRT and they agreed immediately and suggested the then 'gold standard' type. I explained I was doing everything else I could to help clean diet, exercise, no booze, etc etc and they said I was doing all the right self-help things anyway.

Itscoldouthere · 07/01/2021 20:28

Took me about 18 months and 4 visits before my surgery would give it to me, the worst was a female locum doctor who was very rude and dismissive. In the end I just said straight "I want HRT". I now get it through a private doctor, obviously more expensive but she's a specialist, knows what she's talking about so I feel very reassured that I'm doing the right thing.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 07/01/2021 20:31

I was advised that once you are over 45 the dr should prescribe hrt if requested. You are deemed to know your body well enough! Definitely see another dr! I am 46 and have been on hrt almost a year.

HavelockVetinari · 07/01/2021 20:32

I wonder whether this could be the topic of a MN campaign? All women go through the menopause, yet many struggle with getting access to HRT and come across rude and dismissive doctors. @MNHQ ?

There are plenty of campaigns out there already.

A 'make menopause matter' petition has been going for years and brought before the government.

Join Twitter and look for menopause drs and people working with this,

Hi thank you for all your replies. As terrible as it is I feel a bit better knowing I am not on my own. I will definitely go back. As woman we deal with periods from our teens. We know what our bodies do and don’t do throughout the month and we know our bodies. We know when somethings changed. It’s actually insulting to just be dismissed.

I had no problem when I asked for it and it was absolutely brilliant until about 5 years in, I went to the Dr for a check up, bp, etc. She said "well, if you were to give up work and were less busy you might not need it". When I responded "so are you suggesting that every woman doesn't have the right to receive the best treatment to feel their very best" she went a bit pink and stammered an apology.

The issue is that I am an articulate professional woman with choices and both answered her back and paid her comments no attention. Thousands wouldn't.

I must have been about 55. Now 60 and still working in a high pressure role but no longer need HRT because my body has settled down.

Insist op. Or go private.

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 07/01/2021 21:40

Can anyone advice me how to find a private clinic. I am in Scotland

Lots of resources on this charity's site but I'm sure if you contact the founder she will advise you menopausesupport.co.uk.

longwayoff · 07/01/2021 22:03

Try your gp again. Be firm. When I was laughingly, 'o you're far too young' refused, I said sorry to have bothered you. I'll come back when there's a dr in this surgery. He followed me into reception asking me to come back. I was bloody furious. Show him what a hormonal woman is.
