Anaemic

Just found out I’m anaemic.
Periods heavy for 2 days of cycle, but manageable.
Dr asked me to do the poo test for blood. If that comes back negative will they do any other investigations or assume it’s due to periods ?
And if it’s assumed to be periods what treatment can I expect ?
Thanks.

Probably iron tablets I would think?

I’ve been given them. I’m wondering if they might suggest a coil or something else to reduce my periods ?

I had a mirena coil fitted as had ferritin level of about 7. Having no bleeding has really helped.
I was initially resistant as didn’t think my periods were causing the lack of iron. I didn’t feel they were heavy enough. Also was worried about the mirena coil.
However I did it because I had tried iron tablets for two years and eventually paid for an iron infusion from the iron clinic. It really made a massive difference but that wasn’t going to last i carried on menstruating.
So that pushed me to finally try a mirena and it’s been pretty much ok and I’m no longer iron deficient.
Hope that helps and good luck!

What is an iron infusion ?
I’m desperate to get my iron up as I know I’m more susceptible to infections while it’s low.
And it’s probably time to do something about my periods, you don’t realise how bad it is when it creeps up on you.

I had mine privately as I wasn’t offered it on the NHS. It was really expensive but worst it as I received a year’s worth of iron in about 20mins. It was administered via a cannula.

There’s lots of low iron and anaemia support groups on Facebook - might be worth joining?
Or, you could google ‘the iron clinic’ who offer advice and private iron infusions.
Really best of luck. It’s an awful awful experience and hard to get out of and many just don’t understand.

I constantly feel my heart beating fast and get breathless going up the stairs. I’ve just carried on because I thought it was my age, but now I know it’s not I want to stop feeling this way !

Hi I have v low ferritin as anaemia due to heavy periods over the past few years. Oral iron affected my stomach badly and progesterone made me v depressed so I had an iron infusion privately and take tranexamic acid tablets every period which reduces my bleeding significantly. I've had a second iron infusion recently which hopefully last another year. If you can afford it, it's worth every penny.

I had this and it was down to heavy periods caused by a huge fibroid. I was put on heavy duty iron tablets and tranaxemic acid - the difference in just a week or two of iron tablets was incredible. I felt like Wonder Woman - I could run up the stairs again!

Because I was mid forties and was done with family, I had a hysterectomy to get rid of the fibroid.

Sorry forgot to say, there was talk of an iron infusion if my levels didn’t come up quickly enough and a friend also got one on the NHS for the same reason so it might be an option - I guess it just depends if they offer it in your NHS area.
