God awful heavy periods. (Tmi)

53 still having regular as clockwork periods.
Only trouble is they have become so heavy. I'm having to set an alarm in the middle of the night to make sure I don't leak, last night had super Tampon and two pads strategically placed. Wondering if period pants would help too?
I'm paranoid about ruining the mattress and get knackered from disturbed sleep. Is this just normal until they finally stop?

I think we sometimes just put up with heavy periods when we shouldn't. I found out mine were probably caused by polyps. These weren't regarded as a problem when I was pre-menopausal but they kicked up again when I went onto HRT. Post-menopausal polyps are taken more seriously and I have had to have three taken out.

They can also be caused by fibroids, which might need treatment.

ANd you may be becoming anaemic.

I would see whether your GP can refer you for an ultrasound or some other kind of further investigation. I wish I'd kicked up more of a fuss earlier on and perhaps had a Mirena fitted then, instead of waiting until now. I'm going to be 57 soon.

Yes, cause should be investigated, but v common for periods to become much heavier and troublesome at menopause stage.
No need for this, you need a Mirena coil!

I'm on tranexamic acid for heavy periods - I got severely anemic, they were heavy and coming closer together (3 weeks or less between periods).

I'm 52 and they are now getting spaces further apart and sometimes I skip a month.

No longer anemic though, which is good

I'll probably see a GP in the New Year. Don't fancy a mirena though, have migraine so have always avoided hormonal contraceptives in the past. Modi bodi's for now by the looks of things.
Thanks all.

I'm on tranexamic acid for my heavy periods. It reduces the flow and I can sleep through the night now without changing. I've got fibroids, just waiting to get them fixed.

A Mirena coil is only progesterone ( prescribed in mini pill form for people who suffer from migraines as it does not affect migraines, unlike oestrogen)).
It is a "depot" which delivers minute quantities locally to the lining of the uterus over the period of 5-8 years. It is first line treatment for heavy menopausal bleeding when other causes have been eliminated.
