Utrogestan v Mirena?

Is anyone taking this?

I've been prescribed this by my consultant matched with Oestrogel.

I had dreadful side effects when taking it orally so was told to take it "off licence" vaginally to see if I can tolerate it better. I'm now 3 weeks in to this and getting horrible abdominal pains which my GP says is a side effect when taking it this way. I'll continue for a while to see if I adjust to it but I'm not hopeful.

My only other option other than come off HRT (which I really do need) is the Mirena but I'm worried if that I respond badly to that too I'm going to be stuck with it in place.

I was on oral HRT for years with no problems at all but I'm now not allowed it due to chronic breast disease.

Anyone any experience with this?

What breast disease have you had? Is this breast cysts- fibrocystic breasts? If so have they suggested that it's the progesterone in oral tablets they are worried about?

I use Utrogestan, after years on Norethisterone, both with gel.

I use it on a cycle still, even though many years post-meno.
I prefer it and it's slightly less risky.

I take 10 days worth every few weeks. I do get some slight discomfort at night (using vaginally) but it's gone by the morning.

I couldn't bear using it daily- troed that- so maybe you need to think about going back to a sequential regime.

Mirena- yes it's a case of trying and see if you like it.

If only! No I have something called Papillomatosis. I've had multiple procedures to manage it culminating in more surgery in Sept to remove the most troublesome lesion. I have a further 2 in situ at the moment and I'm more than likely to develop more....

The trouble is no one really knows what causes it or what HRT does to it. The breast clinic wanted me off my oral HRT at the start of the year to see if that would help - it didn't. It actually made things far far worse with me having to be referred back every 6 weeks for the cysts to be drained rather than a couple of times a year.

My menopause symptoms are still dreadful so I was allowed back on it after the lab results from the surgery confirmed no sign of cancer. I have been referred to the specialist HRT clinic and they want a more "breast friendly" regime.

Coincidentally I had a call from the menopause nurse this morning who said she would have a chat with the consultant. When she rings me back I'll ask if I can take it cyclically. The pain is preferable to the continual hot flushes and the joint and muscle pains so if push comes to shove I'll carry on with it. At least I can function on HRT!

Thank you for sharing your experience with me - I'm encouraged that at least I'm not alone in my difficulties with it.

The worse that can happen trying the Mirena is that you don't tolerate it and have to get it out. Not great but not irreversible either.

I wondered the same as I do not tolerate progesterone as I've tried it. Utrogestan vaginally, even reduced and then another form through oral hrt and what is supposed to be the gentlest form. Tried taking it every day Vs from day 15, no difference. The effect of the progesterone was worse than the benefit of oestrogen. Oddly, I never really suffered from PMT.

I did wonder about trying the Mirena. Reading threads and talking to professionals, it would seem that the response is mixed. Some having none of the side effects they had with other forms some suffering just the sane and some even worse.

I decided not to try as the symptoms of the menopause are now not so bad and manageable.

Thank you @dontdisturbmenow I never had PMT either and oral cyclical HRT had no side effects for me which is part of the reason I'm surprised I can't tolerate the Utrageston.

And today I have breakthrough bleeding. Great. I don't this regime is going to work. I may need to demand my Elleste Duet tablets back.

4 x Oestrogel/12 days Utrogestan 200mg
This is my second attempt (previously stopped after 6wks as my hair was falling out and acting weird - my hairdresser was really worried about it).
Three years on, I decided to give it another go (it's safer than taking Femston 2/10 & I like the idea of bioidentical as I've always struggled with progesterone).
The pros: I sleep a 'little better' (my continuous symptom since 2013). The cons: Thermostat is off-piste again. 'Angrybird' is an understatement. I am horrid! I know it, but the mist comes down and watch out! I get period pains after sex (thankfully, I have low sex drive, so this is only once a week). I appear to be getting male-pattern baldness (my new hairdresser, has commented how much thinner I am on top - it's frightening as shes only been doing my hair for 4 mths). I have cystic acne all the time, instead of the occasional zit. My rosacea has flared up again, which has been very subdued for a good year or so. As if I couldn't look any more undesirable ..... I think it's causing Hirsutism. I already have enough facial hair for several women, but it's taken off & growing like wild fire.

Has anyone else had this reaction?? I have another appointment with a different Gynecologist in November (private), but I'm 13yrs into this & desperate! I don't want go bald! My chin is growing a second head (with hairs) & the aggression is really horrid (especially for those around me). Any advice would be most welcome???
P.s. I've been taking this combo for nearly 4mths (previoulsy on Femston 1/10 and 2/10).
