If you have a preference you can ask but to be honest if this is your first appt for HRT you probably don't know much about what's out there. It's usually the GP who chooses unless you know what you want.

A lot depends on how much the GP knows about hrt.

Many women now use patches rather than pills, but Femoston is a pill form and one of the better ones (closer to our own hormones), and many specialists prefer estrogen gel with micronised progesterone.

You might have to try several types for a good 'fit' which is normal.

I started off on a combined patch of oestrogen and progesterone but had bleeding. Spoke to the doctor and I'm now on oestrogen gel and progesterone tablets.

Recommend looking at Dr Louise Newson - menopausedoctor.co.uk for information, she's a meno specialist GP and has loads of info and guides to read.

When you make your appointment I would definitely ask for a doctor who specialises in women's health. Most GP practices do have them! It makes all the difference. I started off on gel and micronised progesterone, which didn't suit me so after 6 months have switched to the Mirena coil and gel. You might not get the right combination for you first time round, but a knowledgeable GP will be able to advise on alternatives.
