Does ANYTHING work for thinning hair?

I've been on HRT for about 5 years and all seems fine, with symptoms well under control etc but my hair is so thin these days!
I've always had fine, flyaway hair but now it just seems VERY flat and I'm sure I'm losing more every day than I used to - a small ball everyday after I shower, and I think there are more hairs on my hair brush etc.

I'm generally in good health. I exercise regularly and am a pretty healthy weight.

Is there anything likely to work for hair thinning/loss?

Watching with interest and solidarity ☹️

CornflakeMum · 13/11/2020 16:37

Oh @dingledongle it's awful isn't it? Sad

I know there are endless supposedly remedies touted about by our local health food shop, but I'm not really convinced.

I used a thickening shampoo from Kerastase for a while which seemed to help, but even that seems to have stopped being of use now.

I have started taking wellwoman tablet every day and trying the 'no poo' method on my hair

I think tbh it is hormone related and that perhaps 🤷‍♀️ this is it

I have wavy bob length hair but can see my scalp 😳 especially bad when overhead lights. This is new to me 😭

Husband denies anything wrong but I notice the change Sad

I did try a thickening shampoo too but I think it needs to be an inside out approach not topical iyswim 😊

Not on hrt by the way but could this be causing it for you?

CornflakeMum · 13/11/2020 17:06

I'm not sure whether HRT could be causing it. It seems weird that it's only happening now, but I've been on HRT for some time.
I guess it could be that my natural estrogen levels have fallen even further so the HRT is no longer compensating, but as I say, I haven't had any of the other symptoms return.

I use Nioxin, the whole system. While I don’t think it replaces hair, I find it stops the hair loss - my shower drain thanks me!

Have you had your thyroid tested recently?
I have underactive thyroid and thin flat hair (which falls out easily) and it’s thickened up hugely since taking a thyroid support multivitamin. Hairdresser found loads of new hair.

My hair fell out when I was on HRT - I was really upset as I thought HRT was supposed to improve the hair! It also fell out when I used Vagifem so I'm presuming I'm very sensitive to any hormonal medication. I'm using a thickening shampoo and conditioner, but I agree with getting your thyroid tested and also vitamin/mineral levels.

Try using a sea salt spray on it. It texturises and makes it look thinker. Sorry you are going through this.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 14/11/2020 09:11

Have you tried kerastase genesis (sorry if not spelt right) - they do a serum you drop on your scalp massage in and don’t wash off - it’s meant to support thinning hair.

TwilightSkies · 14/11/2020 09:13

How often do you wash your hair?

Sometimesonly · 14/11/2020 09:14

I have tried EVERYTHING. The only thing that works is a hat. 🙄

MadamShazam · 14/11/2020 09:29

I bought an Essy hair growth oil, not hoping for miracles. But it seems to be helping. My hairdresser noticed my hair was a bit thicker the last time she cut it. My hair is still really thin on the top of my head, but my scalp is a bit less visible.

MadamShazam · 14/11/2020 09:30

I also try not to wash my hair every day, and I don't use heated appliances on it often either. I think the combination of these things has definitely helped.

leopardspotsdotdotdot · 14/11/2020 09:34

This works for a little volume to cover the issue somewhat! Tip your head upside down to blow dry too :)

I've been taking collagen powder. 2 tablespoons in my coffee every morning for the past 2 months and my hair is noticeably thicker, probably back to how it was in my 20s. My hairdresser has commented on how much thicker it is and how healthy it is. People I meet are commenting on how nice my hair looks. For some reason as well as I got older it just wouldnt grow past a certain length but it's now a food few inches past my shoulders. It's good for bone health as well and would definitely recommend.

XiCi · 14/11/2020 09:53

that should be few months, not 2 months

NonsensicalHair · 14/11/2020 12:12

And on a purely cosmetic level, there are hair fibres that can disguise and bulk out thinning hair, such as Toppik. Comes in a variety of shades and can be bought in Boots though it's cheaper online.
