Weird period, is this what I need to expect?

I'm 47, been off hormonal contraception for a few years and periods have been regular and fairly light ever since. Been having hot flushes and quite noticeable PMT/mood issues for a while so assume I'm peri menopausal. My cycle has been very gradually shortening for a while and the last few have been about 26 days but I've just gone 7 weeks without a period, eventually coming on a week ago.

It's like nothing I've ever had before, really heavy, full of massive clots (sorry) and still going strong and showing no signs of stopping today at day 8. I just want to check really that I shouldn't be worried? I feel fine, no pain which is slightly unusual (I generally get a bit of normal period pain and have actually had some investigations for severe pain around where my right ovary would be although nothing was found) but I'm a bit concerned that it doesn't seem to be stopping and just wondered if this is likely to be menopause related or something I should be doing something about? Feel a bit stupid asking as it's the first time this has happened but it's so unusual for me to bleed this heavily or for this long, my periods are normally about 4 days!

Sounds like peri. They told me to see a doctor is the bleeding continues for longer than 2 weeks

It's normal but you can do things to help like Tranexamic acid ( from GP), the Mirena coil or maybe hrt.

It's happening as you have 7 weeks of lining coming away rather than the usual 4 weeks. This is what happens when periods get irregular and further apart.

Thanks both, I was pretty sure it was normal but just needed to check. It's finally slowing down now thankfully, good to know the 'longer than 2 weeks' thing for future reference though.
