Hair loss with Vagifem - anyone else? And did your hair grow back??

Having had a dreadful experience with HRT a couple of years ago, where my hair fell out in handfuls, I was prescribed Vagifem a couple of months ago for vaginal dryness. The doctor reassured me that due to it being applied locally (in the vagina) it would not enter the bloodstream in the same way as HRT and therefore there was little chance of it affecting my hair.

I should have known! Once again, my hair started to fall out. I stopped the Vagifem as soon as I realised what was happening but am so, so disappointed (and annoyed) that this has happened again. My body seems to react this way with any hormonal medication, it did exactly the same for the brief period I was on the pill.

My hair had only JUST returned to (almost) normal from the bloody HRT. Can't believe I've done this to myself.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience with Vagifem, or other locally applied Oestrogen? I hear of other women having such wonderful effects from HRT (including fabulous hair!) and how Vagifem has been a life saver, etc, and I just go bloody bald!Confused

Hi I.just wanted to add my two cents. I was put in Vagifem about 4 months ago
I definitely felt all the side effects such as drowsiness headaches but i got through them. Then I got the hair loss and my doctor is saying the same thing that it's not absorbed systemically. But I definitely believe it is. I've never lost much hair. At the most in the bath tub I would have a sliver of hair in the tub after waking my hair.. Now I have a sizable clump
. I've stopped Vagifem about a month ago and am.still losing lots of hair. My hair used to be very thick and it's now half the volume. Really unfortunate because I liked the product. I've read that if your vaginal lining is very thin then there is a higher likelihood that it will be absorbed.

Hi Mikak, I'm sorry you have had this issue with Vagifem. I am gradually weaning myself off it after being on it for several years. I just want to see if it does stop my hair from breaking and thinning.
It will be interesting to see how you get on aftet another month of stopping it.
Hormonal changes can cause temporary hair loss, but mine has been slowly breaking and thinning for several years.
The shedding had stopped, but started again in October, not sure if it is seasonal?
Please keep us posted on your progress.
Good luck
