Period after 10 months

As the title says really, my last period was December so 10 months ago. Last week my breasts started to get very sore, normally before every period I would get like this and I got cramps which again was usual before a period. Today I'm at the start of a heavy period 😭😭 😥🔫

So is this normal after 10 months and do I start the count again for menopause?

Just to add this period is extremely heavy and I feel so bloated and sluggish I just want to sleep all the time.

I’m no expert (not been through menopause), but I’m sure I read recently that this sort of thing should be investigated and don’t let doctors fob you off.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.

Hope you feel better soon too

I feel for you and can relate. After a few years of light manageable periods I had my last one in April 2020 and was thrilled. UNTIL the mother of all periods arrived 5 months later and then again 25 days later Confused

Am gutted - was happy with light ones, was happy with no periods but having again periods similar to those when I was young is not ambusing.

Had to come off the pill in January so that is not an option now.

If I have a third one I will contact my doctor to discuss ways to decrease flow.

Amusing not «ambusing»

I type too fast :)

pourmethevino · 10/10/2020 21:12

I was happy with no periods, I can't cope with them returning especially this bad fml 😭😭

I'll ring doctors Monday and hopefully get a telephone app.

I'm 46 and healthy, don't drink or smoke and a good weight although today I feel as big as a house 😓

Even if you can’t get to a GP until Monday, my GP told me that taking ibuprofen can reduce menstrual bleeding by up to 15%. I also have prescribed tranexamic acid for the gushers, but its useful knowing there is a limited option available over the counter.

pourmethevino · 10/10/2020 21:42

Thanks, yes I've taken ibruprofen and paracetamol to the max. It normally sorts them but I'm still very uncomfortable.

It's weird because this week I've not been able to sleep and I've been more irritable than unusual. This explains it all 🤯😨

But as PP mentioned about really DO see the GP. I have seen a few things recently that periods restarting can be indicative of a much more troubling issue.

Woolysock · 11/10/2020 09:04

Omg this has happened to me too OP, my last period in December then wham 9 months later AF arrived in September, albeit a light one that dragged on, then last night it arrived again only 3 weeks later and it’s much heavier!

I was feeling bloated and crampy but that’s been the norm lately and emotionally I’ve been a bit all over the place. My hormones have a lot to answer for! In general the past 4/5 years I think I’ve had every menopausal symptom out there, I really thought I was nearly done, both my sister and mum were before 50 so I thought I was on track. Gutted I was starting the count again.

Anyway great advise here thanks all, think I’ll reach out to my GP tomorrow too and hit the ibuprofen, very helpful. Good luck tomorrow OP, hope it’s nothing serious, I’m here with you.

Savemyusername01 · 11/10/2020 09:06

I had this. I thought I’d reached menopause and my periods kicked back in for another year.

BloodyMiserable · 11/10/2020 21:33

Me too! Had my last period in February, a tiny bit of light spitting in August & thought I was done!!

8 months later, it's started. I am 48.5 though, and the women in my family tend to have an early menopause.

I hadn't thought of seeing a Dr though, maybe I should?

picklemewalnuts · 11/10/2020 21:36

It's happened to me twice now. Almost there, then bam!

It's normal. Investigation is more when periods have stopped for more than a year.

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2020 21:41

It's almost certainly normal as you are under 50, but a chat with the GP would be a good idea even if it's just to reassure you.

I expect you know this already, but if you are under 50 you need to keep using contraception for two years after your last period, and for one year if you are over 50.

DramaAlpaca · 11/10/2020 21:44

Also meant to say, it's unexpected bleeding after the menopause that can be indicative of a problem. It's much less likely to be of concern in women who are perimenopausal as cycles can be all over the place until menopause.

pourmethevino · 12/10/2020 22:49

Thanks for all your advice. I feel deep down that this is normal, I'm fit and healthy and never had any problems with my health. It just feels like a normal heavy period and now I'm coming to the end of it after 4 days which again is the usual for me.

I just forgot how shit periods are and be glad when they've completely finished.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/10/2020 17:35

Just to say that you can buy tranexamic acid over the counter at Boots. It's called something like 'heavy period relief'.

BillieEilish · 14/10/2020 18:43

Oh I had this at 45, nearly two years since last period (as it should be under 50... TWO years!)

A mini period. So I had to start counting all over again. Common in early menopause.

Murinae · 14/10/2020 18:46

Think doctors only investigate after one year of no periods.

BillieEilish · 14/10/2020 18:47

… after 50.

JinglingHellsBells · 14/10/2020 19:09

@pourmethevino It's normal. You don't need to see a dr.

They will only pursue an investigation if you are post menopause- that means 12 months minimum from your last period.

Many women go 10, 11 or even almost 12 months and then have another period.

You need to start counting again- from 1- and after another year if you have not had a period, that's post menopause. If you bleed again, you'd need to see your dr.
