Hot flashes? Start of menopause?

I've very recently started having what I think must be hot flashes. Intense heat washes over me and I start sweating and it lasts just a minute or so but feels quite overwhelming. This has been happening several times a day for the past week. Most of the times it has happened, I have noticed that it has been at the precise moment that I have a slight worrying thought - such as I think I've lost my keys or realise I've forgotten to send an email - very minor things, but the hot flashes definitely seem to be related. Is this normal? Could it mean I'm suffering some sort of anxiety? I don't feel at all anxious generally.

Or is this the onset of menopause? I'm early forties and wouldn't be able to find out at what age my mother started. If it's the menopause, do I need to do anything? Like see a doctor? Or take any medication or supplements? Or is this just something we're supposed to just put up with? If this is the start of menopause, how long generally is it before women choose to have HRT?

So, another question: do hot flashes cause anxiety, or does anxiety cause the hot flashes?

Hot flushes can definitely make you anxious. It sounds like you are starting peri-menopause, and it can last for many years before full menopause. HRT is life changing and really important for your heart and bone health. See a specialist/gynae, and don't waste your time with a gp.

Thank you. I've been having occasional night sweats on and off for several years, but didn't know they were related to menopause and I thought I was too young (42 now). I'm definitely open to HRT but am concerned because I live in a country where doctors automatically over-medicate and they just don't seem to have the background knowledge and expertise of doctors in the UK. For example, I work with children and it is quite common for them to be prescribed medication for ADHD with no diagnosis or even symptoms, and if you went to the hospital for a cold or cough, you can guarantee you'd leave with at least 4 different types of medication. So I'm concerned that I'd be prescribed drugs without knowing if I really need them.

I should have added a question to my last post... Is it standard in the UK for women in their early 40s to be prescribed HRT because they have recently started having hot flashes/flushes without any other symptoms? Are there different types of HRT, or just one?
