At what point did you stop tranexamic acid and seek alternative?

Hello
I’ve been taking TA for a few months to curb the very heavy bleeding. I have fibroids. I’m birthing huge clots every month and flooding hasn’t stopped. I cramp a lot as body is trying to expel the clots. I can’t go out for 3 days during period. How long did you use TA and what made you decide to seek alternative treatment?

I've been on it for 20 years, also have fibroids. Has it done anything for you? Are you on the max dose? I found that I have to take it very regularly, no more than a 6hr gap if possible. Start taking iron supplements if you're not already.

I was on it for a few months, but then was given the option of the mirena coil, so took it!

Thank you both. I’m taking 6 tablets a day for 3 days. The clots seem to be getting bigger and more of them seem to be forming. Not sure that’s supposed to happen. Will consider ablation.

In the meantime you could try upping the dosage if your stomach is ok & GP/prescriber is ok with it. I was told 3 tablets, 4 times a day could be tried. I usually take 2, 3 or 4 times a day.

It depends on what type of fibroids you have as to whether ablation could be effective. My fibroids are v sensitive to hormones so I personally would not take anything hormonal. Angus Castus is a herb well-known to help regulate the menstrual cycle & I've had success with it in the past but it takes a few months to work.

Thanks @idevice. Gynae said that fibroid removal would be risk as it’s embedded in the wall of the uterus. Not sure if they are hormone sensitive or not. With the current dose, I feel a bit light headed - probably as I’m losing so much blood. I’m not convinced it’s reducing bleeding but just causing huge clots to form.

I think my fibroids are hormone sensitive because they only became apparent when I went on the pill & I couldn't find a pill to suit me without making things worse. Then they stayed constant except for playing up during pregnancy. Yours might be as they could be responding to menopausal hormonal mayhem! But they still might respond favourably to a hormonal treatment if one was suitable & it could tide you over til post-menopause.

Drink lots of water when bleeding as it's easier to get dehydrated & don't take the tablets on an empty stomach. I've heard not using a tampon or mooncup can be better for preventing clots forming but if it's the drug causing the clotting in the first place then I guess it won't make much difference. I think I've noticed more clots during lockdown which could be due to not exercising, so as always regular exercise is recommended!

Thanks so much for the additional advice! Pretty sure hormone related as I think I have all the peri signs. Started going back to my yoga studio this month but clots are the worst they’ve been. Think I’ve lost a lot of blood this month as feel utterly drained. Will get checked out. Thanks again.

I had bleeding, transexamic acid, ablation, coil, some drug they don’t use any more called Esmya three blood transfusions , an enormous fibroid and a hysterectomy. I am very very happy after the last one of those!!
