Post menopausal bleeding

just wondered if this has happened to others.
In November I was referred. No thickening g, or anything else all clear.
Roll on yesterday. A bit of spotting. Very light. I will make an appointment but concerned I've to go through this again. Smear also came back normal.

We're moving this thread over to our Menopause topic (and giving it a bump in case anyone's around with some advice and support for the OP). Flowers

@neveradullmoment99 A lot depends on how far into post menopause you are. The cut off for investigations is 12 months after a last period BUT some women aren't completely finished with periods by then and do have more spotting or light bleeds.
what investigations were done?

neveradullmoment99 · 21/08/2020 14:09

I had a smear and an internal scan. All was clear. Lining of the womb was a healthy thickness.

When I had the post menopausal bleeding the first time, I think I hadn't had a period for about a 16 months. Must be 2 years or so now.

I am 52.

I had no explanations given either. I just thought it was 'one of those things'

A bit like what you are saying @JinglingHellsBells
Both times, I have felt premenstrual [ sore boobs] so maybe it is still hormonal. Anyway, I have made an appointment with the doctor.

Please go and get this checked out quickly and check for a bypass. It's probably nothing and most people with postmenopausal bleeding don't have cancer. But my mother had this symptom in March and was seriously ill with high-grade uterine cancer by May. All of the people that were on her ward/ in the waiting room that we spoke to had it as the first symptom of uterine / endometrial cancer.

JinglingHellsBells · 21/08/2020 14:22

It's highly unlikely that you have uterine cancer when it's just 8-9 months since you had a scan. It can take years to develop and there are various stages which can be simply a thick lining, non cancerous, to severe changes. The only way to be sure is a biopsy ( think that what @hopsalong means) but if the lining is thin on ultrasound they may not do it anyway.

Usually the women who do have this have and have ignored spotting or more for years ( apologies @hopsalong as this is not presumably your Mum and hope she's okay?)

neveradullmoment99 · 21/08/2020 15:20

Yes, my scan was clear. Docs appointment on Tuesday. It was literally a few months back.
Thanks for your help.
My.mum had bleeding at 80. It was a cyst. Bad new is not everyone's experience but I am getting it checked out.
I left the hospital happy and reassured then my smear came in clear.
Thanks @JinglingHellsBells
You have made me feel so much betterSmile

The lining was healthy and normal is what she said at the hospital.

Sorry, yes, of course I meant a biopsy.

I'm sore on the point, and of course it isn't the most common outcome, but I'm sad to say that my mum actually passed away last month. She had no postmenopausal bleeding until Jan (and menopause more than a decade ago). She went to the doctor after a week or so, and was repeatedly told (after a first scan, even during the eventual biopsy when the consultant was looking at a scan again and the cells she was collecting) that everything looked reassuring. In fact it turned out to be a rare and very fast-growing kind of cancer. Maybe some delay in treatment due to lockdown, but more at the initial end when the hospital cancelled her biopsy. They sent a letter to say there was no need for one because the initial scan looked good. But her GP pressed. And I hope you will too.

Almost certainly it will be nothing but remember that a scan can't determine for sure that it's nothing. I met a couple of women at her appointments (all, like her, were well past the menopause or even elderly) who also had aggressive cancers that started with sudden bleeding. I don't think any of these people were ignoring it, which actually makes sense (if you haven't bled for decades, it's a lot more concerning than for someone who had a period a few months ago).

neveradullmoment99 · 23/08/2020 17:57

Well i had my last baby 9 years ago at 44. Only started peri menopause at about 47 or shortly after that. I'm hoping all is good but thanks. I agree its more alarming when it's been years since you've had your period and even still it may not be negayive news like my mum. Well, here's hoping!
