Migraines - second one in 4 days :( Anyone else? Would HRT help?

Anyone else had an increase in migraines since being menopausal?

Would HRT help with this?

I've been keeping a food diary, but currently can't see anything in common over the past 24 hours between the two migraines.

Any suggestions would be good.

what do you define as 'menopausal' - are you still having periods and how often?

SpanishFly · 19/08/2020 20:11

I had a hysterectomy a few years ago so can't gauge anything on that.
Blood tests confirmed menopause a year or so ago

Hmmm...impossible to say really. I guess the only way is to try although HRT is not usually given just for migraines- you'll have a job getting a GP to prescribe if you have no other meno symptoms.
Did you lose your ovaries as well?

Blood tests are not always accurate so I'd not go on those. Do you have any sign of a cycle each month? (not bleeding obviously.)

No, I still have my ovaries. I have a lot of symptoms, so that was coupled with the blood tests by the GP.
I am also now thinking the symptoms may add up to thyroid issues, so I think full bloods are needed, then take it from there

The stat show that most women's ovaries fail within 2-4 years of a hysterectomy regardless of age.

It's worth working out if the migraines are cyclical-that's the vital point.

Many women get a pre-period migraine when the progesterone levels fall, every month.

The blood test is still not reliable ( as a guide to menopause.) It can change day to day.

The only way is the FSH level to be tested on 2 consecutive cycles, on days 2-5 of a normal cycle. (A one-off test sometime is not reliable.)
NICE guidance says do not test unless women are under 45 and may have premature menopause (which would show up with a series of blood tests.)

If you have symptoms of peri menopause and migraines, think about hrt for those?

SpanishFly · 20/08/2020 15:03

Thank you.

Yes. I could have been clearer in my OP. HRT has been discussed, but I was left to have a think about it. Then lockdown happened. So I'm now back to considering HRT - but in the meantime worrying about other/new/additional/worsening symptoms :(

It is possible that all your symptoms are peri.

My GP recommended Vitamin B complex (high dose) to help reduce headaches & migraines. I've been put into a chemical menopause due to a few issues & was prone to headaches & migraines anyway. I don't take hrt. The vitamin B has helped. I also take red clover supplements & only get a couple of warm flushes a day, no sweating. If I feel a migraine starting I was told to take 3 aspirin as soon as possible. This usually helps reduce it pretty quickly.
