Perimenopause: would you recommend a more a coil?

That's it really. Considering getting one to help with perimenopause symptoms. (Mentally, I hate the idea of having an artificial device inside me and am very freaked out by the thought of getting it inserted. But pissed off with night sweats, weight gain, brain fog and all the other shite.

I have heard such wildly differing stories - some people raving about them, other people saying they were in horrendous pain and they'd never do it again.

Would you recommend?

@BatleyTownswomensGuild

The Mirena coil is not a treatment for peri meno. It's for contraception or heavy periods.

The coil contains only progesterone. To help with peri symptoms you need estrogen .

If you use estrogen you would need progesterone too , to stop the womb lining overgrowing, and this can be a Mirena or tablets, or patches.

Thanks for this. I'm confused now as my Doctor suggested it to help manage peri symptoms....

A Mirena is for women in peri who are having heavy periods and flooding, but definitely not for this But pissed off with night sweats, weight gain, brain fog and all the other shite unless your dr meant it would be used in combination with estrogen.

I was prescribed it for postmenopausal bleeding and found it horrendous - if you reacted to the pill with moodswings etc I would be cautious but you can always get it removed if you find it hellish. Symptoms stopped in a week or so once it was removed. I was in constant pain, like a very bad period and bled a lot more than before. After 6 weeks I demanded it come out. Have occasional bleeds but rather the thinner vaginal lining and bleeds for a couple of days now and again than that pain. But some people find it very helpful so might be worth trying with the understanding from your dr that if you do have problems they will take it out with no arguments.

I have had six months of hell since mine was fitted I’ve told my Gp who was very understanding today if I had the money I’d pay for a hysterectomy, for my birthday I want a pain free day, also to cheer me up I keep planning my hospital bag for this hysterectomy please think very carefully about a coil, I knew mine wouldn’t work but you know what some gynies are like it’s we know best, well I’ve had their best . Sorry for long rant just feel utter rubbish today.

Here's the other side, I bloody love my mirena, I originally had it for heavy peri periods...insertion was fine just a bit of pressure but no real pain, I had spotting for a couple of months and then that was it no more periods and that was 4 years ago. A couple of years ago I started getting loads of flushes, night sweats, brain fog and killer insomnia so added evorel 50 oestrogen patches which have been amazing, no more symptoms at all.
If you don't need a mirena for heavy bleeding or contraception then there are combined patches, pills or gel/pill combos but a mirena alone will not get rid of your symptoms.

I'm the same as rosie39forever, I love my coil, had it for heavy periods due to fibroids, bit of pain on insertion and spotting for 3 months but no periods at all after that, I am needing mine changed now and am using it for hrt with patches for oestrogen. I would recommend it, I can't have a hysterectomy for medical reasons but this has worked out well for me.
