New to HRT & very heavy bleeding?

Liquoricecomfit · 26/05/2020 09:13

I just started estrogel (2 pumps daily) and utrogestan (1 tablet alternate nights).

After 3 days I got a unusually heavy period (flooding). Am feeling quite exhausted by it.

Just wondering if this is normal from others experiences?

I've recently started HRT and my periods are much more regular now than they were but not heavy.

I'm finding HRT beneficial but more regular periods means more headaches and bouts of insomnia.

I would suggest that you speak to your GP about your heavy periods OP. Take care

Thanks for the reply. I am hoping the next one will be more like my usual flow. Hopefully!

I've have taken comfort from the lack of response that it might suggest it is not a common side effect so maybe it was just the initial effect!

@Liquoricecomfit

Couple of points

-are you in the UK?

-If so who has prescribed that regime?

Utrogestan is meant to be taken daily ( 100mgs) or for 12 days per cycle (200mgs.)

If you are using it the way you are, that has to be through a private dr as your GP would not prescribe that.

Using it on alternate days may well be the cause of the bleeding because each time the level falls in your bloodstream, it can cause spotting or more.

Who has suggested that dose?

JinglingHellsBells · 13/06/2020 22:33

ps The period will be your normal period I assume, and would have occured anyway, and not to do with HRT- it can't have that effect in only 3 days.

But the other points I mentioned about the strange dosage still apply :)

Thank you JinglingHellsBells for your answer.

I am in the UK and it was a private nurse prescriber who has a menopause clinic. I have also has a repeat prescription fulfilled from my NHS GP without any questioning the dosage.

I can't remember exactly what she said but I think when she was debating what would be the best regime for to take the Utrogestan she decided alternate days was best for me as some of my medical history suggested I was sensitive to progesterone.

Does that make any sense to you?

I do have a check up with her in July so will have an opportunity to ask about this but really appreciate your thoughts.

I'm also really suffering with noticeably swollen and sore boobs! could that be connected to the alternate day Utrogestan too?

It might suit you better to have the ultrogeston for twelve days a month at 200.
As hellbells said, it is normally given every day at 100, or in a 10/12 day block at 200. I am confused as to why you are having it every other day.

I do find that the Ultrogeston part of my cycle gives me tender breasts, sleepiness, dizziness and vivid dreams or nightmares. I hate those days, but fell so much better for the rest of the time that it is worth it.

I think the flooding you’ve had has been prompted by the progesterone triggering a bleed, but not caused by it. You must have had a slight build up of your lining , so you would have had a heavy period anyway. Three days in is not enough for it to cause the flooding.

Liquoricecomfit · 15/06/2020 21:09

Interesting SirVix thank you.

Yes that makes sense about the bleed.

I do hope that it is the alternate days doses causing the daily breast pain and ever increasing size issues as (funny as it sounds) they are becoming a daily misery.
