3 week period - what to do?

Hello. So I am peri menopausal (self diagnosed). My periods have always been incredibly regular, relatively light and last 5-6 days.

I missed a period last month. This month tommorow I will have been bleeding for three weeks. And tmi but I've been flooding as well. All very unusual for me.

Is this normal? If I carry on bleeding at what point do I seek medical advice?

Hi. I sympathise. I’m 48 so assume I’m perimenopausal. Periods becoming slightly less regular (used to be 26-28 days) and heavier. last months was late and light Then two weeks later I got another one which is really heavy with flooding. I rang gp yesterday who prescribed me something for heavy periods (can’t remember what as I’ve not collected it yet). He’s going to do some other follow up too (blood tests, said I can have smear which has been due during covid so not happened yet) so my answer would be ring them now! See what they can do. The flooding is horrid, I was so glad not to be at work.

Joining in with you both .
49 and on day 7 , I'm usually 2/3 days heavy then 2 lighter days .
I had no period for 6/7 weeks then a 5 day heavy , two weeks later here I am again, 7th day just flooded TMI sorry
On a positive note I saw a comment here recently about blood stain removal and just tried it - result !

Very normal in perimenopause, yes. It's grim.

After putting up with it for almost a year I decided it was impacting my life just too much, so I went to see my GP. I realise it's not suitable for everyone but I had a Mirena coil put in and it stopped my periods completely. I'm out the other side now, at 55, and I didn't have a period after my coil went in when I was 46. It was life changing for me.

@Ginandtonic4all I'd suggest you wait and see how this goes.
One 'bad' period isn't really enough yet to seek medical advice, but if there is a pattern going on for months or years, then yes, do.

You can be given Tranexamic acid ( it's available over the counter too in small quantities) which will help slow the flow and amount, but long term it's better to go for something like Mirena coil, or the mini pill. You may also need to supplement with iron to prevent anaemia. Something like Floridex liquid ( buy it anywhere) is safe to use meantime.)

Thanks everyone x will look into the options. It's pretty grim!

Yes it was tranexamic acid I’ve been prescribed and it did work. Just waiting to see what happens next. My GP won’t do the smear as the testing lab is shut so got to try again in two weeks but had bloods taken today. Hops you’re feeling better @ginandtonic4all. (Gin and tonic help too!)
