Honestly, did you use contraception for a year after menopause?

Just curious really. I'm 53 and just menopausal. The risk of not using contraception at my age feels very low.

I'm just fed up with it. Don't want a mirena for various reasons.

yes, I divorced him.

No, but only because I had my tubes tied years ago! I certainly would have otherwise. My great grandmother had a surprise baby at 50 after not having a period for a year, and I wouldn't want history to repeat itself.

No, because he had a vasectomy years ago and I had the Mirena anyway.

I'd persist for a year after your last period as you are over 50, if I were you. You don't want to get caught out now and it's not forever, though I appreciate it's a pain.

madcatladyforever your reply made me laugh Grin

Hmmm I’m 51 and don’t use any, but I’m on Tamoxifen (had breast cancer at 47). Tamoxifen wipes out your oestrogen, and I haven’t had a single period since the day I started it. If I’d had a natural menopause maybe I would still use contraception.

Yes, because when the peri menopause sent my cycle weird, and we took the emotional leap (rather than the practical decision some years before) that this meant no more DC ever regardless of anything whatsoever that life could throw at us, DH had a vasectomy.

It is very, very rare to conceive and carry a baby to term when you are over 50. But it does sometime happen, and if you are still menstruating then it could happen. Are you ready to face the consequences if it happened to you?

Yes I did.
