Taking HRT to protect against heart disease?

SwedishEdith · 23/02/2020 20:50

I'm four years post-menopause and, other than some hot flushes during the first year or so, I'm not really sure I've had any really bad symptoms to make me think I need HRT. But, I keep reading on here about its protective effects. Has the window closed on that for me now? Should I take it or just get on with my life and not think about it anymore?

Thanks

You would find it very hard to get a dr to prescribe HRT for prevention of heart disease UNLESS you went to a specialist consultant.

There is a podcast on Liz Earle Wellbeing where this is discussed with meno/ gynae Nick Panay. He says he would give hrt to women with no symptoms but who wanted the benefits of hrt - bone protection, heart protection, brain protection. However, he is one of the world's top meno experts and although there are a few consultants who would do the same, your average GP won't.

You are not too late to ask. There is a window of 10 years post meno when the benefits are still possible. Obviously you need to weigh up the small risk of breast cancer- jury still out on that and whether hrt is really the culprit and if so how much.

Thank you. I'll try and take a listen to that podcast.
