I have had normal periods (I am 57) with a bit of spotting. Scan all fine. On my partners insistence I went to see a private consultant he has sent me for an MRI scan I am just really wondering why would he do this. Any thoughts ladies

Are you the same poster who asked this before (different user name)?

An MRI scan is not the normal way to investigate odd bleeding.
Usually you would be given a hysteroscopy (camera in uterus) which is a day procedure with or without a GA.

My advice is you go back to your GP and ask / are referred under the 2-week urgent rule for that investigation.

I have never posted before on this site.
I think you must be mistaking me for another person

Ah okay Sorry!. There have been two posts like this over the past couple of weeks from grandmagorgeous and southlondonlass.

Advice is the same.

Nope- MRI is not used to spotting. Totally unusual to offer an MRI.

You need a hysteroscopy .

Did you see this consultant on recommendation of anyone (lie a GP?)

Have you already had a transvaginal scan? (Not just an abdominal scan.)

Has your new dr seen the results?

There are 3 'gold standard' ways of treating bleeding though if you are 57 and still having periods, you are not actually having post-menopausal bleeding. PMB is considered urgent and you would be sent for investigations within 2 weeks.
1 A scan
2 A biopsy of womb lining
3 A hysteroscopy and a biopsy done at same time.

No one I know of has ever been offered an MRI scan.
The risks with odd bleeding are a thick womb lining which can show abnormalities. That is what the camera looks for an the biopsy.

if your new consultant is suggesting an MRI this is not to be knowledge recommended by the RCOG.

Hello I at the consultant advice had an MRI scan it showed an atypical fibroid with intermediate signal changes internal vascular restricted diffusion and slightly differential post contrast
Any thoughts on this please

Sorry no, but if the person who did the MRI gave all of that info to you, it's a bit irresponsible to leave it with you to worry over.

They will of course send the results to the dr. When are you seeing him next?

I got an mri for a suspected fibroid. I had discomfort and heavy periods but not spotting. Turned out to be multiple fibroids. I’m peri too.

I was told that with some hormones decreasing with my age my fibroids would likely shrink. I haven’t had much discomfort, just before and during periods, so this is probably true. The spotting could be done period that’s been stuck behind your fibroids slowly making its way out finally?

I have been booked in on Thursday for a full hysterectomy. The fibroid on the MRI showed showed some concerning features. He said they cannot be sure what they are until they do a hysterectomy. I am beyond frightened it is cancer

I'm so sorry. It's good you are being treated straight away and if it is cancer the op ought to remove it all. Fingers crossed for you.

Elieza · 23/02/2020 10:19

Hope all goes well OP. Under one in 1,000 fibroids are cancerous apparently. So hopefully they are just erring on the side of caution.

Thank you ❤️
