Perimenopause - how often do you have periods?

I think I'm at the start of all this. Have been getting memory fog and night sweats etc.

How regular are/were people's periods in their mid-40s. I'm 45 and I'm on day 43 of my current cycle and no period in sight. Thought it would be a bit more of a gradual thing but there seems to be no pattern from 1 month to the next....

Is this normal?

Mine got a bit further apart, 40-50 days, that lasted about 6 months and then they just stopped, I went through the whole thing early (early 40s) and fairly quickly, which was a bit odd and depressing at the time but now I'm quite grateful to be honest. The hot flushes during the day were bearable, the nights sweats a bit mental but few and far between - and I also bought some clever duvet that helps regulate temperature that actually seemed to work. You can get a blood test at your GP but the results are really unreliable.

SalmonOfKnowledge · 09/02/2020 12:10

Normal. I'm in my late forties. I had normal periods from Jan to May of 2019, then nothing til September, then a Period in October, November, December. Then a period that lasted about 3 weeks in January 2020.

There is no normal!

I’ve always been regular 28 for years. I knew I was pregnant the first day I missed my period because I’d never been late before.

Late 40s now and they’re now all over the place. I can miss one completely or have 2 in one month. This has been going on for about 5 years. And I think I’m still ovulating so no end in sight.

Talking to friends there doesn’t seem to be and average experience. One friend completely stopped, no other symptoms. Another early 50s still is regular as clockwork.

drivingtofrance · 09/02/2020 12:26

There is no pattern to mine now.

I used to be 28 days, regular as clockwork.

Now I have no idea what will happen and when. I get a hint when I become uncontrollably angry/teary.

I'm almost 52 and this has been the case for about 3 years now.

I just wish it would all hurry up and finish.

Baaaahhhhh · 09/02/2020 12:46

54 and still regular at 29/30 days, and I only have one ovary! Was told I was peri-menapausal years ago by Gp, but that was obviously nonsense. I do have the odd night sweat, insomnia and anxiety, but have always been a bit like that, just a bit worse now. Wondering whether it will ever stop tbh.

BigButtons · 09/02/2020 12:50

I’m 52 and in the last couple of months they have not appeared. First time ever( apart from pregnancies) always 29-29 days apart.

I started HRT in December and haven’t even had a withdrawal bleed.
Would be lovely if they simply stopped:

Patch23042 · 09/02/2020 12:53

I started to have irregular cycles at age 46, having been every 28-32 days since I was a teen.

Went on to Cerazette 12 months ago, have had a short, light period every 50-55 days ever since. Happy with that. No other symptoms.

MaidenMotherCrone · 09/02/2020 13:36

52 and still regular as bloody clockwork.

romany4 · 12/02/2020 00:01

I'm 48 and I've had three at 26 days in the last three months. Before that, they had spread out to 39/41 days.
Really fed up at them getting closer together again

YeOldeTrout · 12/02/2020 21:14

52 and... I don't keep track, so I dunno but seem about monthly. Never were particularly predictable.

LadyEggs · 12/02/2020 21:26
  1. Mine now last for months at a time, followed by a few months of nothing, and back to months of light/heavy/light/heavy.... I'm seriously thinking about getting the mirena coil fitted. Also having night sweats and spongy brain symptoms.
madeyemoodysmum · 12/02/2020 21:30

Mine are variable.

One month 35 days another 18. So bloody annoying.

I used to be 26 days to the hour.

Toria70 · 12/02/2020 21:33

I'm 49 and have a Mirena fitted. I've been every 32 days regular as clockwork since puberty and had light ones with the coil, but a few months ago I had an awfully heavy period that lasted around 4 weeks, and I felt dreadful with it. Since then I've not had another which is actually quite nice.

I do get the odd night sweat but I'm also diabetic and am not sure which condition is the culprit.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 15/02/2020 07:44

My doc suggested I go on the coil. Have never had one before and a bit nervous to be honest.

Finally got my period yesterday after a 46 day cycle. But depressed really. I'm not 46 yet, feels a bit too bloody young to be going through this....

I've had Mirena coils since I was in my late 20s, it was initially on a hospital trial of them.

The last one was put in 2 years ago, and the GP said I could keep this one for 7 years instead of the usual 5 as the hormone (tiny amount of progesterone) is known to help menopause symptoms acording to research.

A colleague is 55, and has just had hers replaced as she's suffering really badly with menopause symptoms and she also has oestrogen patches.
