Mirena suitable?

I went to the doctor about perimenopausal symptoms including heavy periods and horrific mood swings. She suggested trying the mirena coil before Hrt as it works for many women. Only after having the thing put in did I read in the leaflet that it can cause bad mood swings! They are bad enough as it is! Has anyone had it fitted and has it affected mood swings in a good or bad way?

I've had one fitted for similar symptoms to you. I can honestly say I've had no mood swings. They were worse before I had it fitted. I've had one very light bleed (lasted about a day) since September. No weight gain either. I've had a couple of headaches but nothing unmanageable.

Did she give you oestrogen patches as well?

I think mirena is just progesterone afaik.

I’ve had it for 5 years and not noticed mood swings either way! It fixed my heavy periods though (except for one memorable one Confused).

My GP suggested the same, but I’ve had a mirena before and I’m sorry to say it did affect my mood. It would be a last resort for me. I’m holding off in the hope that my periods lighten up of their own accord although I have tranexamic acid for when it’s very bad.

I have fairly big fibroids causing the heavy periods. My GP said no HRT till the periods stop anyway?

I will give it a couple of months then and see how I go. I've a friend on HRT and her periods haven't stopped altogether yet, must depend on your doctor I guess. She had to have blood tests to measure her hormones first.
