HRT and BRCA gene

Can anyone point me towards current advice on HRT when the BRCA gene is a potential issue?

I’m awaiting the results of gene testing but with 2 sisters diagnosed with very aggressive BC in their early 40s and a grandmother and an aunt in their late 40s, I understand the chances are not negligible.

I’m also early 40s, definitely in peri and suffering hugely with hot flushes. However I’m unwilling to take anything that increases my risk of BC and OC. Current medical advice seems to be no HRT if BRCA is confirmed until preventative surgery has been performed. If - and this is thankfully still an if - I get to that stage, it’s between 12 and 18 months away. That seems like a long time when I think of the potential heart and bone risks.

I’m going to the GP next week but would like to have some idea of what she should be advising me and why!

This is not within the remit of most GPs. Your GP is not trained in complex issues like this. You need to see a menopause specialist who treats women with this type of issue.

You could be referred to the Chelsea and Westminster Clinic www.chelwest.nhs.uk/services/womens-health-services/gynaecology-services/menopause-and-pms-clinics/clinics or to another specialist in your area.

I really wouldn't even bother with your GP other than to ask her to write a letter of referral to a specialist.

Where are you based and which large cities can you access for an appt with a specialist?

That's really useful - thank you. I'm in Hampshire so within reach of C&W if there's no-one closer who's suitable.

There really isn't anywhere better if you want to be seen within the NHS. Women come from all over the UK to that clinic and further appts can be done by phone if necessary.

If you can afford a private appt then you have more options either with the consultant(s) who run that clinic or similar consultants in London.
