Still getting night sweats on oestrogel

Can anyone advise what I could do- my GP is useless.
I started oestrogel towards the end of December it seemed to stop the night sweats and I feel generally calmer and clear headed.
I take 1.5 pumps a day. However the night sweats are coming back with a vengeance.
Should I up the gel, give it more time to settle?
Any advice grateful received. Thankyou 🙂

I can't give any medical advice, but I can pass on what my GP shared, which is that the night sweats can be due to sharp drops in progesterone, rather than oestrogen. It's for this reason that I was prescribed a combination HRT patch (not that I can get hold of any at the moment, but that's a whole different thread!). It might be worth asking for some kind of progesterone supplement, to see if that helps?

Hi @BigButtons not sure if I've answered this before or a similar Q?

Couple of points:

The normal starting dose is 2 pumps. This is the information on the leaflet in your carton of gel.

Has someone told you to use less? With gel the beauty of it is you use what is needed to stop the symptoms. You can increase to 4 pumps if necessary (again this is in the patient leaflet in the carton.)

Secondly, 3 weeks on HRT is far too soon to talk of giving up or assuming it's not working. Specialist drs will advise you to give all HRT 3 months.

Eh? Sorry but that is complete bollocks.

Vasomotor symptoms are caused by estrogen deficiency. Your GP is completely confused Hmm

hi @BigButtons
you are always so helpful.
It was my useless Gp who said one pump and 14 days worth progesterone!
Oh I don't intend to stop at all!! I was just wondering whether I should carry on at this dose and hope it would sort itself out or increase until the night sweats stopped.
I will try 2 full pumps tomorrow, give that a week or so and see whether I need to increase.
Thank you so much for your continued support Smile

I have found that many medical professors easily confused and quite ignorant. Rather shocking since it is their job. My useless GO is supposed to be one of my surgery’s menopause ‘experts’😮

@BigButtons
This is from the online patient leaflet- your own copy in the carton ought to say the same.

Menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms:

Each metered dose (1 pump actuation) from the dispenser is 1.25 g of Oestrogel.

Two pumps (2.5 g) of Oestrogel once daily (1.5 mg Estradiol) is the usual starting dose, which in the majority of women will provide effective relief of symptoms.

If after one month's treatment effective relief is not obtained, the dosage may be increased accordingly to a maximum of four pumps (5 g) of Oestrogel daily (3.0 mg Estradiol).

The lowest effective dose should be used for maintenance therapy.

@JinglingHellsBells thanks I had a good read through. Trusted the GP dose-wise. I don’t think she had a clue. Will up it to 2 and see . Thank you so much xx

I was advised to do 1 pump morning and evening rather than 2 together. That seems to do the trick for me.

BigButtons · 20/01/2020 21:28

@Cismyfatarse that’s something I will try. Makes sense to have some oestrogel in the evening before the nightly sweating begins😕
