Not read it yet but my first reaction was

1 It's written by a man
2 It's an early April fool.

I think it's flawed research- it was a tiny sample of women ( just over 2K) done in the 1990s, and it doesn't address the FACT that early menopause is hereditary. So are all these grandmothers, mothers and daughters not having sex?

Surely the easiest way to prove a theory like this would be to do a study on nuns.

I also don't agree that there reason for menopause is unknown; most meno experts will say it's when the woman's body runs out of eggs.

I'm not sure it's as simple as running out of eggs. I've only got one ovary. So should have half the number of eggs compared to most women. But I'm 49 and not in menopause yet.

My first thought is that they’ve got cause and effect mixed up. Early menopause => earlier hormonal changes => earlier decline in interest in sex, surely?

JinglingHellsBells · 15/01/2020 09:53

@Missillusioned It's slightly more complicated yes, but not for the reasons you say.

We are born with millions of eggs and of course we don't have millions of periods over 35 years. Some eggs are 'lost' along the way. In women with one ovary, it performs the work of two.

My meno gynae has written a very detailed book on menopause and they state very clearly that the reason for menopause is the eggs run out.

@JinglingHellsBells so what happens to the eggs that aren't released during the monthly cycle?
