I'm late. I'm never late, often a day early. Been feeling pretty shite for two years. I am SO excited that this might be it, or at least, on my way to it.

Who knew that it would be almost as exciting as wondering if I'm pregnant? Grin

Be careful for what you wish for, post meno and all what goes with it is not fun.

JinglingHellsBells · 20/12/2019 08:23

Crikey- agree with PP!

I'd rather be fertile and pre menopause any day!

Post meno is when women's bodies fall apart without a huge amount of effort and possibly HRT!

Bone density loss, higher risk of heart disease, brain cells decline, pelvic floor degeneration...why wish for those?

nibdedibble · 20/12/2019 13:25

What?? I'm SO OVER periods and perimenopause. I hate this time of life. And I'm fit and healthy and happy to put the effort in - I already have to or I'm a blob, quite honestly.
I cannot wait for it to be over! I have zero need for fertility!

Be careful what you wish for, it's not just the major symptoms of loss of oestrogen that you will have to contend with it's all the bastard little ones that come out of nowhere...... dry, sore skin, thinning dry hair, brittle nails, receding gums to name but a few🙄

drum123 · 20/12/2019 15:57

Blimey, I've not had any of those symptoms and nor have any of my friends. Not having to think about periods, or getting pregnant is wonderful!

How do I put the effort in getting more than 1.5 - 4 hours sleep per night

I thought I had sailed through the menopause until the insomnia hit.

JinglingHellsBells · 20/12/2019 16:01

These are the longer term effects which can happen in 3 to 10+ years. @drum123

You are lucky to have none but on the other hand many women do have these but never join the dots and realise it's all lack of estrogen.

JinglingHellsBells · 20/12/2019 16:03

I don't think anyone here is suggesting that it's only fat, lazy, couch potatoes who get these long term side effects Hmm

drum123 · 20/12/2019 16:08

I'm 14 years past it and although I'm not saying these symptoms are non existent by any means, I am saying not everyone gets them. So, OP, be aware that while it might not be all plain sailing, you might be lucky like me (and all my friends, some in their 80's). Yes, we all have some niggles as we age, but not having periods and not having to worry about getting pregnant really are the bonuses of the menopause.

Equanimitas · 20/12/2019 16:28

For me, the menopause has been brilliant. Apart from not having all the faff, hormonal changes, worry about pregnancy etc, it means I no longer get the crippling headaches I used to get so often. The sheer freedom that that gives me is wonderful.

TitsInAbsentia · 20/12/2019 16:39

If only it were as clear cut as just turning off a tap. I've missed a few, gone up to 4 months without one and then WHAM (sadly I don't even mean whamageddon) I get one that is so horrendous.....if anyone does find the magic tap let me know Wink

teenagetantrums · 20/12/2019 16:44

I realised the other day l haven't had a period since maybe July. Def not pregnant and so happy this might be over. Apart from not being able to sleep well. And a year of random periods lasting anything up to 2 weeks l have had no horrendous symptoms of menopause. I'm 53 would be thrilled to be done.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 20/12/2019 17:16

I am fit and healthy and put effort in but that doesn't stop you from getting VA, took me two years to get that under control with various forms of HRT i would love to go back to pre meno days.

PlasticPatty · 20/12/2019 17:20

I love not bleeding. Not keen on the thinning hair. Delighted by the sense of freedom - I'll do what I fucking like, thank you.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/12/2019 20:10

Don’t count your chickens. At 53 I was the same. Thought I had nailed it.

Then the not being able to sleep well kicked in.

Atm with out 8mg of Melatonin nightly which I have to get from the US sleeping more than at best 4 hours per night is all I can manage. I went 4 years on nearer 2 hours per night.

Couldn’t work couldn’t do anything as I was like a zombie everyday.

Then I discovered Melatonin.

Please don’t dismiss not being able to sleep well as a minor problem

JinglingHellsBells · 20/12/2019 20:22

I had no problems with peri at all and thought that peri and meno was a myth and I was escaping it with a healthy lifestyle, till my periods stopped at 53. Then I started being unable to sleep and hot flushes/ slight night sweats within weeks of my periods stopping. I went onto HRT within a few months as hourly flushes were a PITA as was lack of sleep. I was also diagnosed with very low bone density a few years earlier- no risk factors, no symptoms (of course) and I only found out as I decided to have a bone scan out of curiosity.

amaryl · 20/12/2019 21:20

If only it was as easy as your periods just ending. Hmm
