Hi I used to post on MN many years ago and have just rejoined to try and get any advice I can on this!! I'm 54 had a last period or so I thought Nov2018 Then suddenly after 11 months I had a period out of the blue in Oct 2019 which was unremarkable and just like any other I've ever had. It lasted the usual 5 days sore boobs a bit moody and that was that. I was at GP for something else and mentioned it and he said he thought it was shedding of the lining as my periods stopped abruptly and not to worry unless it happened again. Another Dr then saw this and decided to send me for a scan just in case. I had it yesterday and my endometrium is apparently thickened at 8mm and should be 5 max and they have said I need a biopsy. I'm quite scared and not sure what to think but am happy they are onto it. I have no other symptoms and no pain or anything Has anyone had this and could tell me how quickly biopsy results would be back? thank you

Hi this is quite common “at our age” and is more than likely nothing to worry about, biopsy is really easy to take just like having a smear. The results will take a couple of weeks if it’s nothing or they will ring you quite quickly if they find something. Most women who are given the all clear are advised to get a mirena coil to keep the lining thin and avoid the risk of endometrial cancer but good that you’re getting checked out.

Ironed54 · 14/12/2019 15:55

Thanks so much for the reply. Is the mirena the only choice as I wouldn't be able to have that

No mirena isn’t the only choice but it is the safest and easier option as requires no surgery and can easily be removed if not suitable and thins the lining really well and keeps it that way. You can have ablation, where the lining is removed surgically but then the risk of regrowth is a possibility. Can I ask why you can’t have a mirena?

Ironed54 · 15/12/2019 18:24

Thanks I am on medication for an immune condition which contraindicates hormonal treatment

@Ironed54 - Snap! Am having a hysteroscopy and biopsy 1st week of January.

Ironed54 · 15/12/2019 18:35

Oh goodness there's 2 of us :)) How long did you wait for the appt?

OP posts:
MrsSchadenfreude · 15/12/2019 18:55

I got my appointment under the two week wait, but they ran over time in the clinic and couldn’t see me. I had to rebook and it’s now more like a 5 week wait...

Ironed54 · 15/12/2019 19:50

Oh ok thanks That would be Xmas Eve for me I was hoping for after Xmas but will take whatever Did they give you a measurement from the U/S scan

Oh ok then ablation would be an option, where the lining is removed surgically or even a d&c though this is quite old fashioned and not too many gynes do them now, ever with your immune condition you may still be able to have a mirena as the progesterone only acts locally and doesn't enter the bloodstream, there are other coils which have lower doses than mirena.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 15/12/2019 20:00

I went through this last year. My lining was 24mm with very heavy bleeding and clotting. Had biopsies, numerous ultrasounds, hysteroscopy,(and colposcopy) the whole works. All normal for my age, nothing untoward found other than a fibroid and a polyp which was removed and biopsied (all ok).

I ended up on norethisterone for 10 months, then the mirena was put in in August.

Just started having annoying bleeding at the end of November so waiting to see if it’s doing its job and will settle back down. If not they said they’d remove the fibroid and maybe an ablation. They’re pretty quick to rule out cancer,

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 15/12/2019 20:02

My biopsy results took 6 weeks. And that was fast tracked. An anxious wait but all fine.

Ironed54 · 16/12/2019 13:42

Thats great news for you! I am so scared but will have to be patient and try and stay calm. He looked with the camera and said everything looked fine apart from the 8mm thickness. I have had no bleeding since but am still anxious

Honestly it’s very common, the good news is they’re investigating it. My mind went into overdrive thinking I had cancer but in reality all was normal for my age (50) and for you too. I too had no bleeding for nearly a year before the awful flooding started.
No point in worrying, enjoy Christmas and put it to the back of your mind.
Oh and stay away from google!!! Did me no good at all. X

Ironed54 · 16/12/2019 20:53

Thank you x Oddly have just had text from GP saying he is deciding what to do following my Ultrasound whereas the guy who did it said next step biopsy But I am going to take your advice and enjoy Christmas and deal with all this post Xmas

@ironed54 Try not to worry.

Honestly, your drs seem to have overreacted and they are not exactly correct. the rule is that any bleeding 12 months or longer after a final period should be looked at. You had gone 11 months from what you say?

During peri- which you are- it is perfectly normal to have an 8mm lining. The 5mm rule only applies to women post menopause- and you aren't.
Most drs would not send you for investigations at that point.

I'm actaully surprised they kicked this off. In all likelihood it will be a complete waste of time and you will be fine.

Hyperplasia is quite rare anyway, and it tends to occur in women many years post menopause, often if they are overweight as fat produces estrogen even post meno.

By the way you said 'he looked with the camera'. Have you had a hysteroscopy now or was that an ultrasound scan you had via your vagina?

Ironed54 · 17/12/2019 10:01

Thank you thats so reassuring. My GP was completely unconcerned nd he spoke to a gynae doctor at the hospital initially who also dismissed it Then a new registrar was looking at my notes and decided she wanted investigations and now this! I had no bleeding before or since and it was light and 'normal' for me anyway. I had a trans vaginal ultrasound

Ironed54 · 17/12/2019 10:05

Yes to be clear I had gone 11 months literally to the day and GP said as my periods stopped overnight with no fluctuations etc he thought the last one may have been 'incomplete' and it was a shed of old cells (sorry if tmi)

OP posts:
JinglingHellsBells · 17/12/2019 12:22

Your GP was right, It's quite possible during peri to have no periods for ages and incomplete cycles, but your body still has some estrogen circulating but no egg released, so progesterone isn't made- this makes the lining thicker and thicker till eventually an egg makes it and you have a full cycle.

Sorry you are going through this but I'd have thought a registrar was subordinate to a consultant and TBH you could refuse this procedure as 2 drs think it unnecessary.

Ironed54 · 17/12/2019 16:46

It seems I am in 'the system' now and am waiting for a call to see whats what. My GP is usually quite pro active with everything and so for him to say it was nothing is very unusual I'm spooked now though and every twinge Im convinced I'm dying Not helped by the doctor who measured i holding my hand in a pitiful way when it as over like the last rites
