Perimenopause and Mirena coil

I've had heavy periods for ages and some menopausal symptoms. I recently saw a doctor about my heavy periods / resulting anaemia and ended up being fitted with a mirena coil. I had a few days where all was well but now for the past three weeks I've been having light bleeding every day. Has anyone else experienced this? Any chance it will stop soon?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the light bleeding may continue for a while, some people get next to non and some it can go on for months. The progesterone in the coil is thinning the lining of your uterus which is causing the bleeding. If you can it's well worth persevering with it as it will stop eventually. I was in the same boat as you and had spotting for 4 months but since then I haven't had a period at all for 4 years so has been well worth it for me and won't hesitate to get a new one as I use it as part of hrt.

Yes with the Mirena you can bleed constantly for 4 months or so. Quite upsetting as you got the bloody thing to sort out the bleeding!

Just when you're about to throw in the towel and take it out, it stops for good.

And is the best thing you ever did!

Same experience for me, the initial few months bleeding is annoying but mine was fairly light. The Mirena has now more or less stopped my periods which was really heavy from fibroids.

Thanks for your replies. I've hopefully just got another 3 months of bleeding then Smile
