any advice for thinning hair

As the title says really.

Am 45, starting getting a few peri-menopause symptoms this year. Have really noticed a difference in my hair - thinning a lot on the crown (although still good on the sides.)

My mum had very thin hair after menopause and I don't want to go the same way. Has anyone out there found anything that helps? Have heard caffeine shampoo can help stop loss - has it worked for anyone?

research minerals and vitamins for hair loss and appropriate doses. Buy the individual vitamins, minerals as appropriate. Don't make the mistake of taking a multivit either general or even one specific for hair loss.

Vitamin D3 gel capsule in oil is one definite one for you. 4,000iu minimum.

DianaT1969 · 14/11/2019 22:44

Are you dying it? Most people on the grey hair transition FB groups report that their hair is much thicker and softer once they stop dying. Visible new growth. True for me when I stopped dying it a year ago.

uggmum · 14/11/2019 23:03

My hair became very thin. I started taking high strength biotin. It took a few months but I noticed new growth. It's now back to its normal thickness.

Emerald13 · 15/11/2019 09:03

I have thinner hair too. I use iron supplements, vit D and magnesium and with a shorter haircut I feel that the difference in the quality of my hair isn’t noticeable. I hope!!!:)

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 15/11/2019 18:21

Thank you.

I do already wear my hair short because I just don't have the volume to wear it longer. But it's starting to look noticeable even with short hair now. I take iron already as I've had issues with low ferritin in the past but my levels are not especially low at the moment.

I'm not sure if it's hormonal /genetic or not - my Mum had female pattern hair loss...

I'm wondering if the hormonal changes in perimenopause are having an Impact? In which case, diet supplements actually make a difference? Be genuinely interested to hear about people's experiences here...

Biotin supplement and Olaplex hair products.

I was losing my hair at a scary rate. A year on, and it's back to its usual thickness.

JinglingHellsBells · 15/11/2019 19:40

I started losing hair and supplemented with iron (think I was getting low as eat little red meat and still have periods/ cycles on the type of HRT I'm on. It did help and once I stopped the iron my hair started shedding again. I also bought Viviscal but not sure if that helped. You could if you can access it try a trichologist like Philip Kingsley where they will do tests but quite £££.

JinglingHellsBells · 15/11/2019 19:40

ps I looked into research on biotin, bought it, but there is no real evidence it works.

princessTiasmum · 17/11/2019 00:02

I have been taking Biotin for a year and it isn't making any difference,it seemed to help the hair that hasn't thinned, but no regrowth
Seen a dermatologist who said he thinks it is stress related, but i have now come to the conclusion that it is my hrt
I have been on livial for almost 2 years, and hair gradually thinning, but Dr tried me on Evoral Conti and it just fell out, floating all over the place, went off that back to livial, no different, so went off livial for 2 months as experiment,,hair stopped falling, so tried livial again, now losing it at the front too, before i had lost hair in patches [almost bald] from the crown down
Derm says it is Effluvium telogen, so off hrt now altogether, really getting me down now
Sorry i know this doesn't help you, unless you are on HRT of some kind, especially with Norethisterone as progesterone in it

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/11/2019 09:08

@PrincessTiasMum

Sorry to hear that. It's really dispiriting, isn't it? Hugs Thanks

@princesstiasmum Sorry I don't have experience of HRT, but just to urge again for people not to use dye on thinning hair. If you check the responses of the FB group Gray and a Proud, you'll see that 99% report thicker, softer hair within weeks of stopping with visible new growth. Their photos show dramatic improvement. I experienced it too. No more hair shedding in the shower or on my brush.

princessTiasmum · 24/11/2019 17:52

Thank you will have a look at that ,it did cross my mind that a certain different hair dye might have something ton do with it,but i read that hair dye can't cause hair loss from the roots

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 17:55

@BatleyTownswomensGuild

I would get some hair extensions they don't damage the hair if they are glue in and make you feel better about yourself.

BennyTheBall · 24/11/2019 18:08

Surely it's hormonal? Low oestrogen/higher testosterone. Hair needs oestrogen to stay in the growth phase longer.

My friends that are menopausal take HRT for this reason, among others.

I don't think dyeing has anything to do with it.

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 18:17

@BennyTheBall

Sometimes your thyroid stops working and your hair falls out and Doctors try to tell you it because you are old and menopausal which is rubbish because my Aunt who is 82 has thick grey hair and has never had hair loss.

BennyTheBall · 24/11/2019 18:32

Yes, absolutely. But most of the time - I think it's a straightforward hormonal issue relating to menopause.

DianaT1969 · 24/11/2019 21:16

Isn't it easier to believe the women who have stopped dying than to chase elusive hormonal balances?

From a FB group (Gray & Proud) this month:

"Question: Just starting this journey. Just wondering if your hair gets healthier and thicker when you stop the chemicals."

-sure does

Mine has definitely gotten softer and thicker with each new month of natural growth!❤️

Yes, 💯!!!

My hair is much thicker. Yet it’s softer too. So glad I stopped coloring.

Most definitely in my case, my hair is thicker softer and shinier

Yes!

Mine did!! I also stopped using detergent based shampoos. I only use natural ones now and my hair is growing like a weed!! 💕

Definitely healthier! I also got new growth. Win-Win 👩‍🦳🤗

I used to color my hair all over every 10 to 14 days. I never realized how much I was losing. Within a few months I had new hair coming in!! My hair feels thicker, yet more fine. It feels like silk and shines!!

Yes! So much stronger and healthier

Most def!

Mine is so soft and shiny and I am noticing new growth at
the top and back of my head and around the front as well. Not loosing as much when washing it either.

[out of around 130, 4-5 people said they didn't see any improvement in thickness or new growth. The vast majority did].

thecalmorchid · 24/11/2019 22:33

I went over to a vegetable dye (semi permanent) once I hit menopause. I take HRT.
I've found that although I colour twice a month I only use it sparingly on the grey bits at the roots.
My hair has been much improved by stopping the permanent colouring with harsh chemicals as I'm not quite ready to embrace the grey just yet!

JoannaObrien · 25/11/2019 04:39

I dye my hair dark blonde and have highlights put in it every 6 weeks. This has not effect on my hair what so ever. It is usually either low ferritin, a hormone imbalance (too much testosterone can cause hair loss) or thyroid disease. Also stress can cause your hair to fall out as can having a bad flu bug or an operation.

Very interesting, my dermatologist said mine is TE but chronic as i have had it longer than 6 months, but noticed since stopping livial my hair has stopped falling, but when my Dr changed me onto Evoral Conti , my hair was falling out very fast , it was most likely the Norethisterone progesterone which caused it, as when i stopped that, it also stopped falling ,but not straight away
