.... what would it be?

I’m 41.

Knackered all the time.
My joints ache.
Get “period flu” every three months or so. Always the same: exhaustion, sore throat and eyes, ache like flu just before period. No cold symptoms, stops after 3 days.
Periods still roughly monthly. Usually one month light, one month medium, one disgustingly heavy and then repeat.

Iron levels ok. Not had Vit D checked but get plenty of outdoors time.

I take a berocca most days.

Is there one supplement that’s made the difference for you?

Help!

Magnesium 👍 x

Wilmalovescake · 13/09/2019 21:19

Ooh I’ve got a bottle of that somewhere! Ok. Will try it.

It will help tremendously with fatigue and sore joints. Give it a go. You're 41 - could be the start of peri menopause. Keep an eye out for any other changes and make sure you take a good daily supplement as well as the magnesium, to include D3 in particular. Wishing you well.

RandomMess · 13/09/2019 22:42

I take B6, magnesium and taurine - feel so much better for it.

Can you recommend the ones you take please? Isn't taurine what you give cats ?Grin

Hecateh · 13/09/2019 22:51

Not just one because I think everything I take helps but
Magnesium Glycinate
Vitamin D3 (gel capsule in oil) and
vitamin B (all of them but especially 6 and 12)
also cheap supermarket vitamin c and zinc for immune system

I don't know how much is due to most but since I started I feel so much better

RandomMess · 13/09/2019 22:55

I got this combo researching for severe PMT / PMDD so much better on them!

If you could recommend me one supplement...

@Namaste6 What other changes? I've seriously buried my head in the sand, I'm knackered even after a decent nights sleep, I ache, I look like shit and I have no interest in sex. I'm 44 this year 🙈

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 13/09/2019 22:56

Thank you!

@userxx Go and see your gp or a menopause specialist if you have access to one. There are over 34 symptoms of peri menopause; sore joints, fatigue and loss of libido feature. For me, it was tiredness and extreme joint pain which started around 43. Quickly followed by random electric shock type zaps in my legs, arms, head. I visited my gp convinced I had MS to find out my hormones were out of kilter due to peri. Check out the menopause doctor / megs menopause / Liz Earle wellbeing - all great sites that discuss menopause and peri symptoms in detail.

userxx · 14/09/2019 09:25

@Namaste6 Thanks for that. I'll have a look into those sites.

I started my peri 2 years ago at 41 with awful symptoms, insomnia, body aches, depression and so on. I take hrt, vitamin D, magnesium and I try to avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Sarcelle · 14/09/2019 23:47

Tumeric for joint pain
Sage and flaxseed tablets for flushes

Wilmalovescake · 14/09/2019 23:50

I’ve started in Magnesium and Vit D today. I already take a Berocca multivit and I’ve thrown some iron in the mix too.

I know I won’t know which it is if I start to feel better but at this point I don’t really care as long as something works...

At 41 if you are having all those symptoms you might want to think of supplementing with estrogen- HRT!

You could waste ££££s on stuff and really none of it is proven to work- Royal College of Gynaes produced a report a while back and no supplements worked.

If your diet is good you do not need supplements of minerals or vitamins. If you think you need iron see your GP for a blood test.

It's a terrible waste of time and energy trying all these things- which take 3 months usually to work.

Magnesium can be found in lots of foods so it's far better to eat the foods. www.healthline.com/nutrition/10-foods-high-in-magnesium#section6

Nuts, seeds, avocados, and even chocolate!

pottedshrimps · 15/09/2019 20:54

High dose vitamin D. I take 5000iu each day. All aches and pains and general grottiness has gone.

ckc45d10 · 16/09/2019 20:32

Ditto for turmeric, but there are challenges with absorption. Forms that are hydro-soluble absorb better.

Tatapie · 16/09/2019 22:30

Menopace worked for me, less tired and thicker hair!

Melroses · 17/09/2019 21:43

High dose vitD with K2, magnesium, zinc and boron.

I have just started it - ordinary higher dose (1000iu) worked for me before, but I had to keep taking magnesium as the joint pains returned. This has the magnesium with it, and K2 makes sure calcium goes in the bones, and the zinc and boron are also supporting minerals.

Otherwise, review your overall diet. Most vitamins are better when they are taken in as food. Vit D is not available in large enough amounts in food. And exercise. They both seem to be the magic answer to everything.
