Utrogestan dosage

Just been prescribed utrogestan tablets 100ng and eastrogel pump. Have been told to take utrogestan 15 days after starting the gel for 12 days and make sure I note the date of the 1st Tablet’s. Then every month after take 2 tablets on that date only. I said it back to her to check this was right and she said yes. Reading threads on here seems like it is recommended to take it ffor 12 days every month. She is an expert on Menopause so sure she is right but can anyone confirm they do this too?

My prescription is for 200mg utrogestan 12 days out of every 28. Sounds like crossed wires somewhere, OP.

Yes that’s what I thought. I will contact her to check. So glad I looked at some threads here otherwise I would have got it all wrong.

Sorry but that's completely wrong. Not sure how she is an expert on menopause dishing out that kind of information especially when the instructions are crystal clear on the leaflet in the box!!!

If you are using it sequentially, so you get a monthly bleed, you take 200 mgs for 12 days each 28 day cycle. you need to take 2 capsules for each of the 15 days.

You can start on any day of the month if you don't have natural periods. (If you do, it's good to wait till day 15 of your cycle.) Otherwise start on day 1 of each month or day 15 for the 12 days.

If you are using is continuously- every day with gel too- you take 100mgs each evening. Some drs say take for 25 days and allow 3 clear days to see if you bleed at all, others say it's ok to take every day- both are fine.

I hope you will write to or phone her to point out her error- women may end up with hyperplasia (can become cancerous long term) if they follow her advice.

Well I feel even more confused now. She made a point iof saying women get very confused about when in the month to take it and said if you start on 25th in the first month then it’s the 25th every month. I just got confused over wether it was just that day or fir 12 days from that day. This doesn’t seem to be what you are saying at all.

Sounds like you misheard her. Is this your GP?

Have your periods stopped?

If so, using Utro for 12 days a month mimics a cycle. (A normal fertile cycle has around 12 days of progesterone produced after ovulation each month. This is what HRT replicates in a 28 day cycle.)

You can start on any day and yes, keep to that day each month. However, for simplicity, and easier to remember, some women wait till the 1st of a month to start - so 1 October. Or you could do 15 September.

You can as she says choose any day to begin - like today or tomorrow- so in October it will be the 12th or the 13th again...

The main point is you use it for 12 days and use 2 capsules to give the 200mg dose.

Easiest is to take two tablets from 1st - 12th of each month

JinglingHellsBells · 12/09/2019 20:19

It depends because sometimes it is better to choose a start day bearing in mind a period will happen roughly 3 days after the last Utrogestan in each cycle. There may be social or work stuff happening on the 15th of a month so some women may want to schedule a bleed to avoid that ( ie prefer a bleed at a weekend . or during the week...)

I use it on a longer cycle under a consultant's approval and try to avoid bleeds at weekends when I am more likely to be out and about as the bleed is quite heavy.

sunglasses · 12/09/2019 20:27

Haven’t had a period for 3-4 months so not officially menopausal but in Perimenopause.
So if I started that eastrogel on 1st of the month would I stop on 15th and take tablets for 12 days then start gel again on 1st and tablets on 15th. Then there would be days when taking nothing but that would vary depending on wether 30 or 31 days in a month. Is that right?

Actually just looked and gel is every day no break. Please say I have that right. I am beginning to question my intelligence! I am putting it down to peri brain fog!
To further complicate matters I am seeing a surgeon next week to discuss a hernia repair. Have heard HRT has to be stopped before surgery especially around the abdomen. Can anyone confirm this as don’t want to start it to have to stop soon.

I have just started on the same combo of gel and tablets as you, OP. I am using the gel every day. I plan to start the Ustrogestan on the 15th of each month, for 12 days. That will mean I will be having gel and tablets together for 12 days in each month, and gel only for the remaining days.

bengalcat · 12/09/2019 21:31

Yes you take your gel daily . When you see your surgeon ask him/ her re whether to and how long to stop HRT before surgery not us .

sunglasses · 12/09/2019 21:32

Thanks. I understand now. Got there in the end!

OP posts:
sunglasses · 12/09/2019 21:36

Will ask the surgeon obviously and won’t start taking it till after talking with him. It was something I read and again not something my GP mentioned and she has only just referred me for surgery so thought she might have mentioned it. Thanks for all the helpful replies.

You may not need to stop HRT before surgery.

The risks of HRT / surgery is to do with blood clots BUT transdermal estrogen (gel or patches) does not have any added clot risk ( above your own existing risk.) It's tablet form hrt that is linked to clots.

Your surgeon may not know this unless they are experts in HRT too so it may be worth asking them to ask a gynae colleague for advice if you go ahead with surgery. Don't just go by the 'rule book' if the hospital or pre op nurse advises as they aren't necessarily aware of different types of hrt.

bengalcat · 13/09/2019 10:21

Weirdly doesn’t sound as though she’s started it yet though ?
