The dreaded hot flushes

Hi, I've just recently joined the menopause gang at the age of 45 and I am really struggling with hot flushes. I had an interview and sweated the whole time and it really affected my confidence. I'm looking for recommendations to take as I don't want to start HRT if I can avoid it

There are no proven alternatives to HRT that work.

The only things to try are sage (tablets/ tincture), acupuncture, yoga, exercise, healthy eating...

At 45 you could be in for a long haul with this going on for 5-10 years, and it might be worth reading about HRT risks/ benefits especially if you find you get other symptoms as you get further into peri.

For peri-menopause, the mini pill can be very effective at alleviating symptoms like hot flushes, anxiety, insomnia, etc.

Ha, did 18 months of it. The hot flushes got worse, started to come with nausea, weakness and feeling faint. Went from a few times a day to several times an hour.

Crashing exhaustion, woke exhausted, in bed by two in the afternoon. Had to give up work.

Couldn't move, eat, carry shopping, drive, do housework,vwithout becoming faint and nauseous.

Digestion, mobility, joints, sleep, every bodily system affected.

Started hrt, it works.

Thanks so much for replies, I may well give in to hrt i think x

Like you I am in the throes of menopause at 46. Deep joy! I can't have hrt but the doctor prescribed clonidine hydrochloride for my hot flushes. 50 micrograms in the morning and evening. Works well. Could be worth a try for you?

@pooptastic There is guidance from NICE that BP drugs and ADs are only to be given to women who cannot use HRT at all and generally, meno specialists are trying very hard to stop GPs using these when woman can use HRT (because they can have their own side effects.)

Obviously for women who have had or have active illnesses which prevent use of HRT they can be helpful.

@pooptastic 👍
