Heavy period

I'm 45, normally as regular as clockwork. The last 2/3 periods have been extremely heavy, but short, over within 3 days. I came on yesterday, a week late, and this morning I was so heavy, I lost a large clot, the size of my thumb, blood was literally pouring out, as if I was having a wee. I was cramping loads. Since then, I've worn night towels, and it's slowed down.
It's as if I'm having most of my period in one go. Is this normal? I'm off on Thursday and thought I may go to the docs, I've also been thinking about going onto the pill to make them more regular?

Yes could be peri menopause. Mine went very heavy but the actual bleeding short but then be always been heavy. I had the Mirena for 18 months they'll probably recommend that rather than pill at your age. I didn't like the side effects so I went back to taking tranaxamic acid. I can vary between 24 and 31 day cycles.

I had this when I was about 45. it was like a tap turning on. Huge clots as well. Then my periods got longer and longer.

I was eventually diagnosed with a large
fibroid. I had it removed and my periods returned to 'normal'.

I'm now 53 and no sign of the menopause at all.Confused. However my last couple of periods have been heavy (but nothing like as bad as before). I'm not sure if it's because the fibroid is growing back, which I was warned might be the case.

Go and get it checked OP.

That's exactly what it was like, a tap. I was just coming upstairs to the bathroom and it neatly soaked through, luckily got to the loo in time.
I don't really want the coil, I haven't used contraceptives for 10 years as dh had a vasectomy, but used to be on the pill, which I though may also help with heaviness etc.

I tried the Mirena (dh had a vasectomy when I was 32) but that made no difference. Worth a try though.

Span1elsRock · 02/09/2019 21:40

I've got a Mirena but my periods are getting progressively more heavy - I'm 49. I need to bite the bullet and go back to the GP again.........

Frankly I'm sick of it all and can't wait for it all to stop............ Hmm

DramaAlpaca · 02/09/2019 21:40

Irregular periods is normal in perimenopause but I'd get checked out because of the flooding.

Flicketyflack · 02/09/2019 21:50

Went to my gp because of this, they gave mea scan and found an 8inch cyst!
Paid for it to be removed privately due to 18 month waiting list.
Down to one ovary now because due to size of cyst they removed the ovary as well!
Periods still erratic, sometimes heavy and sometimes two in one month with clotting.
I have been offered mirena but not keen either because my dh has had a vasectomy too.
Go to gp and get checked out ☹️
As someone else has said I will be glad when ovaries give up 😬

Same here, heavy bleeding for a week, clots etc. Gone through so many packets sanitary towels its ridiculous.
This happened to me back in Jan. I'd never had any problems before. I saw a gynecologist who gave me a scan then suggested the Mirena coil or an ablation. I decided to see what the following month was like but I was fine up until now.
Anyone else had an ablation?
Ive just turned 50 but no other peri symptoms

IamHyouweegobshite · 05/09/2019 11:38

Just back from the docs, I'm having a fasting blood test tomorrow, will be checking hormonal balance, anemia, thyroid etc. She mentioned the mire a coil, I said I wasn't keen, I could go on the mini pill but she said that it may not improve. I was given meds to take on the heavy day which is meant to decrease the flow. I've got an appointment in a month, to see results etc.
I'm just not sure about the coil, apparently I can keep it in for 10 years. People who've had it, had it helped? Does it hurt - at the time- and afterwards, cramping etc? Ridiculous that I'm worried about it, had 3 Children.

I had the Mirena it definitely helped the heavy periods. They became barely noticeable but there were other side effects for me. It stopped me ovulating which was part of the problem but it doesn't do this with most people. Don't get the copper coil though. They make periods heavier. The tranaxamic works for me as long as I take two religiously three times a day along with two ibuprofen.

Hairydogmummy · 15/09/2019 00:02

Oh and the Mirena was fine going in. Took some paracetamol and ibuprofen beforehand and barely noticed the pain going in or afterwards and taking it out was fine too.

I have fibroids and am on my second Mirena. It has been a miracle for me as my periods were heavy I would have to set an alarm and get up in the night to change everything before I soaked the bed.

No real side effects from it. Easy insertion and removal - like a smear test. My periods have now almost stopped but I don't know if that's because of the Mirena or because I'm nearly 48.

IamHyouweegobshite · 15/09/2019 07:09

I think I'm going to try the mirena. I have been booked in for an ultrasound in 2 weeks, and then I have an a doc app the following week. Hopefully nothing shows up on the ultrasound, I'm assuming they're covering all the bases, which is good, at least they're being thorough.

Another vote for the mirena here, huge floody periods reduced to nothing, not had a period for 3 years it's been amazing. Insertion is really quick more pressure than pain. You May have spotting for up to six months but compared to heavy periods it's nothing. I added oestrogen patches six months ago and feel better than I have in years.
