Post Menopausal Bleeding and Scan

So I was period free for 12mths and 10 days then had bleeding and went to doc and have just had a scan. Gynaecologist said everything fine. "It was just a build up of hormones and the body had to release it." I took that to mean a type of period. He then said there was 0% chance of getting pregnant and if I bleed again to go to GP to have it checked out.

I didn't think to ask him but I have read that the clock starts again when you get a period and I need a new 12mth block of being period free before I should stop using contraception. There is a history of late pregnancies in my family. An aunt at 46, a great grandmother at 49, my mother at 40 and my good self at 41 so I am a little over cautious and reluctant to throw caution to the wind. I know it is highly unlikely but .....I was wondering if anyone has any insight or experience. Thanks.

He might have been able to see your ovaries and deduce if there were any follicles, but I'd not take his word for it as it very much depends on the expertise of the person looking at the scan.

If you are under 50 you carry on with contraception for 2 years after last period. If you are under 50, it's 12 months after final period.

sorry- last part should say if you are 50+ it's 12 months of contraception after final period. Your last bleed would count as a period.

Jingle - thanks. Yes he did look at ovaries and he positioned the screen so I could see everything. Not that it made much sense to me. That's what I thought too - another 12 mths of contraception.
