Evoral Conti and hair loss

I had already experienced some hair loss, but now i have seen my hair in the last 5 weeks go from a few bare patches to a full line of bare scalp, from one side to the other
I was wary when my Dr prescribed Evoral Conti as i had read of ladies losing hair on it, and one of the side effects is hair loss, he said they all say that but the Oestrogen will help hair growth,he was wrong, and i have noticed hair still coming out, but absolutely horrified and devastated tonight to see just how bad it is
I am not using any more of these patches
It is the type of Progestogen, [Northeristone ] that is the cause

You could try other types of HRT where the progesterone is either dydrogesterone (Femoston) or micronised progesterone( Utrogestan.)

Norethisterone is classed as an androgenic progesterone meaning it's linked (by its composition) to male hormones = possible hairloss.
The other types are more 'female' types.

But hair loss is listed on all types of HRT sadly.

Sounds like for you the balance of estrogen and Norethisterone wasn't right - maybe a higher estrogen element would help?

I noticed that my hair is thinner and I lost a lot of my hair too. I am on femoston and my dermatologist said that estrogen will help with my hair too. I don’t know what to do, it is the only side effect my hrt has.

princessTiasmum · 26/07/2019 10:14

Well i hve taken my last patch off, my Dr is away until the 5th of August, but managed to get an appointment on that date
I am going to have to buy a wig as it is that bad
Even while i have been on here for only 30 minutes i have strands falling out, all over my laptop
My daughter has been also given EC as her usual Femseven is not available, she is frightened to death it will happen to her as her hair is lovely and quite long
I can't believe my Dr didn't check especially as i mentioned that is is a side effect
I will just stay off them

I will care more about my nutrition and I will see. I don’t want to lose the benefits from the estrogen but I wonder if 2mg is too high dose for me and maybe that is the cause for the thinning of my hair.

princessTiasmum · 26/07/2019 11:05

The hair loss isn't the only side effect of Evoral Conti, i had the runs for 2 whole days at first, and off and on since then, but it is the hair loss which bothers me the most,
I can't go out without something on my head now,it is so noticeable

Have you thought of seeing a trichologist such as the clinics run by Philip Kingsley?
They can do a full range of blood tests and also offer treatment.

You can change your HRT- there are lots of options such as the Mirena and estrogen, or estrogen-only patches and a different progesterone like Utrogestan.

If you don't mind periods again you could change to a sequi regime where you would only use progesterone now and then, if hair loss is an issue.

My Dr gave me some steroid lotion which usually works and it seemed to be until i went on Evoral Conti, so i will see what he says when i see hi, on August 5th, i know what is not causing it, that is low iron and thyroid

OP posts:
JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2019 14:13

why would you be given steroid lotion (like Betnovate?) This is for an inflamed scalp with eczema etc. Sometimes that does cause hair to break but it's not a treatment for hair loss.

princessTiasmum · 26/07/2019 19:23

I was given the betacap as my scalp had been itching, nd apparently it does help hair regrowth according to a few people i have spoken to who said the same on gransnet, their hair came back
When i first went to the Drs with some hair loss ,the Dr said it looked inflamed, and my daughter said it looked red
I had been under a lot of stress over the last year especially ,so maybe that was the cause of it, i just don't know

Sorry meant to add that it seemed to be improving until i started on the Evoral Conti,

I have suddenly started having thinning hair but am on implants. Hair used to be my feature and other types of hrt don’t work!

princessTiasmum · 26/07/2019 19:45

JinglingHellsBells Steroid treatment can be given for hair loss, if you google it, either by topical treatment/cream/lotion, or injections for
Alopecia Areata

Coming at this from a thinning hair/hair loss angle, as well as menopausal, just to get through day to day while navigating your way through your HRT issues, I can recommend Nanogen hair fibres to help cover any patches where hair loss has occurred. I don’t have anything to do with the company but have female pattern hair loss which has got worse since the menopause kicked in. I use Nanogen to enable me to literally leave the house each day. You just sprinkle in the fibres as per instructions and bingo! It has been a real gamechanger for me while I try to find the right treatment to prevent further thinning. I haven’t contemplated HRT but reading about the hair loss side effect rules that right out for me! Hope this helps.

princessTiasmum · 04/08/2019 13:01

Pandamumma those fibres are awful, i have some and they don't cover the bald bits unless you have some hair close by for them to stick to
I feel really dirty when using them, just wanted to wash them out, maybe for small spots might be ok, but mine is almost the full length of my hair from one side to the other
If it was just heavy thinning might work, but not for mine i am sorry to say
Going next week to see if i can get a topper, that will have enough hair on it to cover ,until hopefully it grows back
Thank you for your suggestion though

Ah I see, yes I suppose it depends on what is appropriate for each of us Smile. Please do let me know your success if you go down the topper route, I think they are a great idea but am concerned about how to make them secure on one’s head. All the best and hopefully you’ll find something that does the job.

I know my hair loss won’t be reversible without a transplant so am just trying to keep it as-is without it getting any worse. It’s really hard to keep positive but it could be worse, I suppose.

princessTiasmum · 05/08/2019 23:06

Pandamumma why do you think your hair wont improve, ? did it go gradually or suddenly, mine seems to have got like this all at once,
At Christmas i had a photo taken, and my hair was fine,
These last few months it has drastically thinned, like one night i looked at the back through a mirror into a mirror,if you know what i mean and i almost had a panic attack,i couldn't believe what i was seeing, so went to the Drs, saw 2 separate female Drs who basically were useless, and came home feeling worse,
After a couple of weeks i managed to see my own Dr who had been off ill, and he gave me the steroid lotion, and Evoral Conti patches, he said oestrogen will help, but i then read about a few people who had hair loss with it, and realised that mine had got even worse, so back i went today, stopped the patches last week,as hairs were floating in front of me
He said all my levels of iron, B12, Vit D, Iron etc were fine ,but folic acid a bit low, so will carry on taking that

OP posts:
Pandamumma · 07/08/2019 20:37

PrincessTiasmum my condition is androgenetic alopecia so it has been thinning gradually, but over a period of many years, then got worse since hitting 50. I caught sight of my scalp in a shop window one sunny day and just felt utterly destroyed when I saw the extent of the thinning in daylight. My hope is to keep it at Stage III of the Sinclair scale (I to V) and not have it get any worse. Other than a hair transplant I’m not sure what other options I have. Like you I’ve had the tests for everything but all normal, except I have low ferritin levels and slightly low vitamin D levels for which I’m now taking a supplement. I’d be really interested in your experience if you go down the topper route though Smile some of them online look really good.

princessTiasmum · 08/08/2019 09:40

Pandamumma yes i will let you know,my Dr told me on monday that i AM short of folic acid, which having gooled is neccessar for hair growth, so taking that now too
My looks very thick from the front, and isn't thinning all over, just patches which i can't understand, he says it is not in the pattern of female hair loss Confused
