How to protect my mattress?

ZillaPilla · 24/07/2019 09:26

Night sweats - gross.
I wake literally dripping. The duvet, sheets, pillow and mattress protector are soaked right through to the mattress.

What can I do to protect the mattress. I guess once I'm done I'll just get a new one, but meanwhile?

Waterproof mattress cover. We've always had them, for obvious reasons.

And HRT. Why are you putting up with these sweats if you have no medical reason to avoid HRT?

Loads available and doesn't have to be the sort that rustle!

JinglingHellsBells · 24/07/2019 09:35

HRT.

Is there any reason you cannot use it?

Waterproof mattress cover?

ZillaPilla · 24/07/2019 10:11

It's all very new tbh - within the last couple of months. I have also started some meds which can disrupt sleep and am diagnosed with depression which I know can cause sweats.

Only now am I thinking it's actually the menopause. I did mention to GP and he seemed to think I was too young, which is baffling as I'm 48. Clearly I must look about 25 and he didn't check my notes!

You don't need to be quite so snippy with me (or maybe I'm being sensitive).

I will look at mattress protectors, I've only used them for the kids and they seem gross, but I shall look at better ones.

Thank you

Use an old thick wool blanket, it must be 100% wool then the water proof mattress cover, then another water proof mattress cover then a flannelette sheet then normal sheet.
I had the post partum sweats so badly I shrunk the feather duvet but the mattress was absolutely fine.

Newyearnewunicorn · 24/07/2019 10:16

I don’t use incontenence (sp) matter covers just the water repellent ones from supermarket

PerfectPear · 24/07/2019 10:18

Homfy waterproof mattress protector (I bought off amazon) is amazing. I had a bleed which soaked through clothes onto the bed but the mattress protector stopped it from going on the mattress

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/07/2019 10:19

Asda sell the waterproof ones cheap for all bed sizes.

ZillaPilla · 24/07/2019 12:01

Thank you. I think I was hoping for some magic non-waterproof thing that would work as it's my understanding that those things just make you sweat more. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.

Not being snippy. It was a genuine question about HRT. No one needs to put up with that amount of sweating- the lack of sleep will have a far worse long term impact on your health.

The depression is possibly hormonal too- has that been mentioned? Have you had depression before your late 40s?

Mattress covers- you can get towelling ones with a waterproof backing and then use a cotton quilted type on top which stops the rustle factor. Have a look at John Lewis bedding, online.

I can't take HRT but still find this interesting www.menopausedoctor.co.uk/menopause/women-need-hrt-not-antidepressants

Aquamarine1029 · 24/07/2019 14:00

I can't not comment...

You ARE NOT too young for peri-menopause. Not in any way. Most gp's are absolutely useless when it comes to peri and menopause, and they allow women to suffer needlessly because of their ignorance. You NEED HRT and it will literally change your life. There is no reason to be so miserable. Please read this article because it's very informative, and then get back to your gp and demand support.

ZillaPilla · 24/07/2019 14:06

The depression starting during a very difficult divorce, def nothing to do with menopause.

I am still struggling with that, and an eating disorder (again triggered by the divorce), both of which I have either had or continue to have a great deal of support with.

So, you can see how it's not so easy to pin down.

I really do appreciate how lack of sleep affects my over all health.

But how do I know it's menopause and not one of the many other things which can cause night sweats? Trial and error?

Hi you're 48 so it's more than likely peri menopause if you're still having regular periods, or menopause if you're not, if it's disrupting your life to the extent you mention then you need hrt. However night sweats alone do need to be investigated to rule out thyroid, autoimmune and other health issues, but from what you describe I'd have a fiver on it being meno related.

JinglingHellsBells · 24/07/2019 15:45

Are you using talking therapies like counselling, life coaching or CBT to help with your divorce aftermath?

Most experts now suggest talking and behavioural change / mindset rather than drugs for moderate depression.

Can you access any of these?

Windygate · 24/07/2019 16:16

I bought a waterproof quilted mattress protector from Dunelm. DH had major bowel surgery and the Macmillan nurse recommended it. It isn't hot and sweaty to sleep on and is fully machine washable. Really glad I bought it.

ZillaPilla · 24/07/2019 16:33

JinglingHellsBells Yes, I have been under the care of the MH and ED team for a long time, the meds are just one part of the support.
It's more than moderate depression.

My periods have become closer together and slightly heavier but nothing unmanageable.

Go back to your GP and ask for HRT. If it works you needed it, if it doesnt, you can stop.
