Magnesium supplements for insomnia?

MichelleC69 · 19/07/2019 09:49

Has anyone tried these? Started yesterday after reading that they can stimulate the production of melatonin and therefore help with sleep. Hoping for great things based on Amazon reviews! Would be interested to hear if anyone has had success with them.

Yep, started taking it about two weeks ago, I’ve been sleeping through quite a lot better I’d say* I’m taking Floradix Saludynam because it’s got vit D as well, which apparently helps.

*(Apart from when someone comes in at 2am being ‘quiet’ in that way only drunk people can.)

Lisette1940 · 19/07/2019 11:59

Perhaps an Epsom salts bath might help - the salts contain magnesium.

I did try Magnesium Citrate but it has a laxative effect GrinBlush so switched to the baths. You could try a magnesium spray on your skin either.

NoCauseRebel · 19/07/2019 12:07

I’m not going through this but I would say be very careful about taking any kinds of supplements bought over the internet. I have recently had to take magnesium because of having to go through various things in hospital which caused all my electrolytes and such to be out of sink, and it is thought that the magnesium could have been part of a trigger which caused me to go into cardiac arrest.

you would be better buying magnesium rich foods rather than buying tablets. I would never, ever take anything like that without medical advice - it seems harmless to take what is essentially a mineral but the body can and does react in different ways even to mineral supplements.

I occasionally take Magnesium, which I buy in Holland and Barrett. If I take one every evening I get an upset stomach and diarrhoea.

LittleAndOften · 19/07/2019 12:14

Magnesium is much better absorbed through the skin than through the digestive system (it can give you a really bad tummy!). I tried the spray but it really stung so now I buy magnesium salts from home bargains. Having a bath is also supposed to help insomnia so this could be the way forward OP.

Gosh NoCauseRebel hope you've recovered. That must have been scary.

MichelleC69 · 19/07/2019 12:42

Oh God am a bit worried now, spent £17 on the best rated supplements! Will see how I get on but be careful like some of you have said - thanks.

Never noticed much of a change taking magnesium, even going for the best supplement available. I certainly do with taking melatonin. I need to take 9mg for it to work and it only helps with falling asleep not staying so for 7 hours but it's still a blessing.

Emerald13 · 20/07/2019 08:01

I take magnesium as a supplement cause I take daily vitamin D and it depletes magnesium.

Ellabella989 · 20/07/2019 08:04

I use the magnesium spray as its better absorbed through the skin. Do not make the mistake I did once and spray it on freshly shaved legs. My god, it felt like I was on fire!
Spraying it on my arms and chest is always fine (tingles and mildly burns for about 2 mins but this is completely normal). I always sleep well when using it. There’s also a magnesium body lotion which my mum swears by

BestIsWest · 20/07/2019 17:46

Yes, use the lotion not the spray! here I often see it in TKMaxx for around £4.

The spray is very good for nighttime cramps though.

Eloisedublin123 · 20/07/2019 23:19

The magnesium you put in hot water that fizzes or the Epsom salts foot bath both work v well for me! Take in the evening

QueenOfWinterfell · 23/07/2019 16:55

I’ve bought the tablets from Boots and found they worked well

Howdidthathappen1 · 25/07/2019 18:38

Magnesium supplements have massively sorted my sleep. I do experience being a bit groggy in the morning the same as after taking melatonin (bought in the states) but I sleep like a log with them.

MichelleC69 · 25/07/2019 18:40

I have to say I've been taking them for a week now and have definitely seen a difference. Don't know if it's the placebo effect but I don't really care! I got 8 hours last night, in this heat!!!

OP posts:
MyLittleToffe · 25/07/2019 18:50

I have been taking them for a couple of weeks and tend to sleep trough and be much better rested.
It is worrying to read about potential side effects so I will take stock. But having had decent sleep for a bit has helped my anxiety and stress.

I haven't tried epsom salt or the spray but might give it a go. Any brands anyone would recommend?

swingofthings · 25/07/2019 20:10

I went and bought the gel, and besides burning my legs (yes had shaved not long before), although it seemed to cool the legs, I actually had a very bad night. Tried the night after (avoided leg shaving!) and another bad night. Still waiting to be convinced!

scottishdaisy · 26/07/2019 16:05

I use this ZMA from my protein. It's a combination that includes magnesium. Loads of the reviews mentioned improved sleep and I'm convinced it helps me. I'm less likely to wake up in the middle of the night and stay awake for hours... do still wake up from time to time but tend to get right back to to sleep again. (Still exhausted by night time though!)

Oops. Here's the link.

The80sweregreat · 28/07/2019 13:33

The lack of sleep is actually finishing me off!
I'll try the magnesium.

Aroundtheworldandback · 28/07/2019 23:41

Rather than supplements I swig 20mg of magnesium just before bed. Worth a try.

IceDream · 29/07/2019 07:28

Is that liquid Magnesium Around?

Aroundtheworldandback · 31/07/2019 13:00

Yes liquid magnesium made by Floradix in health food shops but easier to order online. Faster absorbed and works like a dream before bed.
