Mirena

Just turned 50 and need some advice.

I'm on my second Mirena which I've had more than 7 years. GP advised a year ago this was OK as studies showed it is still active beyond 5 years. However I realise I can't leave it in forever and as I've just turned 50 I want to start taking my health seriously! I'd also quite like to know if I've reach menopause!

A lot of women my age say their periods have become irregular or stopped altogether. What I'm wondering is if they are using contraception? My worry is if I get the Mirena removed I could still potentially get pregnant.

Any advice?

I definitely don't want another Mirena, as it was very painful getting it inserted both times and last time I said never again!

The Mirena continues to act like a copper coil even after all the hormone has gone. Not sure for how long but think I read 7 years ( am sure you can find this online- google Mirena and how long it lasts as contraceptive.)

You need to use contraception for 2 years if your periods stop before you are 50 and 1 year after they stop if over 50.

You will only know where you are once the coil is removed.

I was told that at 7 years the hormone would have pretty much run out, but also that they don't bother to remove them any more Shock

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't had a period since 2006 due to Mirena so how do I know if I can do without contraception? There must be others in the same position, not been able to find anything online!

You'd be wise to use contraception until you know otherwise. That means having your Mirena removed (of course they remove it- you can't have a foreign body left there forever as the uterus shrinks anyway post meno.)

If you have it removed, you need to see if you have periods. You can't tell any other way.

They say the risks of getting pregnant after age 54 are pretty remote.

Ok I looked it up (!) - it can remain in place up to age 55 even if that means it's been in 10 years. But should be removed after that.

You and me both! Whip it out in five years then!

Thanks for that link. Also in this position and must have had mine in for about 6 years. Forgot to ask at last smear when it was due out but sounds as if it can stay put for a while longer.
