Menopause and Alcohol

Anyone else going through menopause find their tolerance to alcohol lowered. I'm talking even a couple of small wines can leave me irritated, irrational and over sensitive. Would love to hear your experiences.

I used to be fine but now I’m Menopausal, alcohol ruins my sleep.

somewheresorted · 25/05/2019 14:53

Same here - it really ruined my sleep and even half a bottle at the weekend took me a couple of days to feel normal again. I’m already struggling with the night sweats and brain fog and the alcohol I’m sure wasn’t helping! I quit 4 months ago and feel so much better.

MrsDrudge · 25/05/2019 15:00

I agree - alcohol makes my night sweats worse, and sleep really disrupted.

So pleased I'm not the only one. Literally, I have two sips of gin and I feel so ill. Sick, dizzy and a migraine type headache. Awful.

Mmmmdanone · 25/05/2019 15:47

Don't know if I'm menopausal (probably given that I'm 49!) but indefinitely can't drink like I used to. And I don't go through the happily tipsy phase; straight from sober to feeling like crap. So disappointing!

Mmmmdanone · 25/05/2019 15:49

AND I don't even like the taste as much as I used to. Should probably just give it up completey.

WhoAteMyNuts · 25/05/2019 15:50

I tend to drink low alcohol versions now as I cannot tolerate alcohol. Bloody perimenopause Angry

Tui76 · 27/05/2019 05:00

Totally! I used to be able to have a few glasses of wine, but now after the second I start getting a migraine which then lasts until the morning!

GetOffTheTableMabel · 28/05/2019 08:37

Absolutely! I really like a glass of wine but I feel so headache-y these days. I have always had menstrual migraine but perimenopause has made them unpredictable, more painful, longer and less likely to respond to medication. I’ve started to think of my reaction to alcohol as being more like an allergy these days. And when someone says ‘would you like a glass of wine’, I replay it in my head as ‘would you like a headache?’. It makes it easier to say no to something I used to enjoy.
That said, I’ve been on HRT since January and last month I had my first period for about 2 years which didn’t begin with a crashing migraine. (I’m 48)
