Long term contraception and approaching menopause?

What was your experience of coil / Mirena / depo and approaching menopause?

I’m 43 and have a mirena and no periods. It’s due out in two years. Would/should I get another? That would take me to age 50. How would I ever know if I was through menopause if I never had periods anyway?
Thanks.

What about getting your tubes tied? It's brilliant.

I’ve been thinking about this as well OP. I am on the pill and do not have periods because of it and have been wondering exactly the same thing. I suspect I am hitting peri menopause due to other symptoms and genetics but seeing as I don’t have periods... how will I know?!!

I was under the impression it was quite major surgery?

If everything is normal, it's a simple keyhole operation that takes less than 30 minutes. Recovery is quite speedy, as well.

I had my coil changed at 45. They said the Mirena would do me 7 years cos of my age and see me through the menopause. Its been great! Really keeps a lot of the symptoms at bay.

That sounds ideal.

No need to stress how unwanted pregnancy would be at 45+ for us.

I had my tubes tied in my early thirties, I'm 46 now, and I have never ever regretted it. My husband offered to get the snip, but I really wanted to do it. It was definitely a psychological thing for me. Knowing I couldn't get pregnant was AMAZING.

I'm 51 and on Cerelle so I don't have periods. I get warm but no sweat drenching flushes, got the cba's and everyone gets on my tits but I couldn't tell if I am peri or menopausal either.

I'm 45 and have had a Mirena for 3 years. I plan to replace it in two years' time as I'm sure it's helping with peri symptoms. My mental state is very calm on Mirena - I don't have the hormonal swings I used to get before I had it. For me, it's been great and I plan on sticking with it until I'm post-menopausal.

Mirena is the only contraception licensed for the progesterone component of HRT.
Until you go through the menopause and for 1 or 2 years after (2 years if age under 50) you will need contraception.
So in theory if you have the depot or mini pill, and you'd like HRT for menopause symptoms, you could need to take combined HRT and the mini pill - doubling hormones in effect.
I'd go for the mirena any day.
