Hrt and back pain

I started everol conti 3 weeks ago due to awful menopause symptoms - hot flushes, anxiety, depression, brain fog etc but for the past 8 days have had lower back pain, it feels like I have strained it but haven’t done anything to cause the pain.

Is this a thing? I’ve tried ice packs but it’s not helped. Just wondered if there was a connection with the hrt?

HRT is putting back the hormones you used to have.
Unlikely any connection.
More likely 'old age' and something that might happen anyway.

You are using conti- so you are post meno?

Thanks for responding. Yes post menopausal for two years now. It doesn’t feel like “old age” pain, I do have arthritis in my feet and general aches and pains elsewhere, this is a different pain, low back and hips feels very sore too. The joys eh! Grin

Do you take progesterone? That kind of dull backache is definitely a symptom of the pessaries for me.

Yes the evorel conti patch is dual hrt.

@Teddybear45 Do you mean Utrogestan? (in the UK it's not licensed for vaginal use but many women do use it that way but Gps don't know about using it that way.)

Dora26 · 13/05/2019 12:23

I would give your prescribing dr a ring

Teddybear45 · 13/05/2019 12:28

@JinglingHellsBells - I take Utrogestan for IVF and it comes with vaginal applicators. My GP is well aware that it should be taken vaginally - it’s actually recommended now.

@Teddybear 45
So you aren't using it for menopause? You use it for IVF?
It is licensed and used vaginally for IVF and yes, comes with applicators.

For HRT it comes now ONLY as 100mgs (used to be 100mgs or 200mgs capsules) and the licensing does not include vaginal use.

HRT is different to use in pregnancy.

In the UK it is not recommended and is not licensed as such by the NHS. In addition, many GPs have not even heard of it as part of HRT.

I was given the choice how to use it many years ago by a private meno gynae, who explained how it's licensed in the EU for vaginal use but not in the UK.

I've been taking Evorel Conti patches for a few months and have been experiencing what has become near-constant back pain. I suffer from some joint pain anyway, so I thought it was just another side effect of ageing but it's got so bad now. Menopause symptoms or back pain? Great choice.

I'll have to try to find out if all HRT medication has similar side effects. If anyone knows ....

JinglingHellsBells · 03/03/2020 12:18

@Anduni20 Maybe see your dr and ask for an X ray? Some women have undiagnosed osteoporosis. This can cause fractures of the vertebra, which can cause horrid back pain. It won't be related to HRT as hrt actually helps joint pain.
How old are you, what age was your last period?

mrsnw · 03/03/2020 14:28

I had back pain for about four weeks after starting hrt.

Late to this post but it came up in a google search I did about HRT causing lower back pain. I’ve been in pain with my back for about a year. A similar amount of time I’ve been taking Evorel Sequi. I’ve had a private MRI because of the pain and was told there were no serious issues but to have physio walk a lot. I’ve been doing this for about 9 months with no relief. About 6 days ago I decided to stop the HRT due to bloating and dry skin issues. My back pain has immediately gone. No twinges no dull ache. I can’t believe it’s coincidence. That said the flushes have returned with a vengeance!

FancyHedgehog · 26/12/2024 01:41

Exactly the same for me. Thank you for your post. The penny has just dropped for me that my back pain is because of HRT. It’s been constant and so tiresome. Especially bad first thing in the morning. I’m stopping the patches.

blackandwhitefluffycat · 15/01/2026 21:03

I’ve been suffering with back pain since starting evorel conti patches recently - I’d been on Utrogestan for 1.5 years without issue so didn’t even consider that they could be the cause. Google tells me that back pain is very common with them! I’ve never had back pain before in my life, and like a pp mine is worse first thing!
