Am I really a bit young?

I was recently at the doctors about various symptoms...he said it could be anxiety or I could be in perimenopause. Then he asked if my mam went through her menopause early... I’m 50 next birthday! And he made it sound like I’m a bit young to be going through peri so probably anxiety, when I actually thought I was a normal age as all my friends a year younger then me are all done with it and I’m pretty much the only one still having periods...

I think average age is 52. He can do a blood test though.

Oh dear another dr who doesn't have the foggiest about menopause.

In the Uk the average gae of menopause (final period) is 51.

The run up to this (peri meno) usually takes anything from 1-5 years.

So no, you are classic peri meno age.

Don't let them give you anti anxiety drugs. NICE has produced meno guidelines which show these are not the right treatment.

If you have other symptoms, you might want to think about HRT.

He can do a blood test though he did a blood test but said because I'm still having periods it probably won't give him much information and will probably be inconclusive. Haven't had results yet but he seemed to think it was a waste if time...

JinglingHellsBells thanks, maybe I should see a female nurse practitioner when I go for my results

My doctor suggested the same to me last year and did tests. I was 40.

I think I will be young when it starts. Bloody well hope so anyway.

I’d try hrt if you’ve got symptoms that you need help with. Including anxiety. Have a look at menopause matters website. Blood test won’t show much.

I was 48.
Periods slowed right down then stopped about 51-52.
I used to have the racing heart beat but that's gone / 54 now.
Had CBT for the anxiety which is the best thing I've ever done.

My advice is you read the Nice menopause guidelines- easy to find online.

NICE- Blood tests are not needed- they say- for women over 45.

(waste of time, waste of NHS cash and not accurate anyway- the reasons.)

Their advice is ..if it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, walks like a duck....

apply the same to menopause!!!

The treatment for menopause anxiety is HRT.

Your mother's history can be a guide bit not absolute. My mother started the menopause at 15!

stucknoue · 04/05/2019 18:14

I've had symptoms since 44, or sleep and hot flushes mostly but still regular periods, though they have changed (shorter but heavier). My dr said anything from 40 is normal range and it can be 10 years from first noticeable symptom to final period. She did say if I wanted more kids though don't delay even a month (I don't)

@ArnoldBee so how old was she when you were born?

BooseysMom · 05/05/2019 16:52

Hi, sorry to threadjack but I'm 47 and having Peri symptoms. I wanted to say Robin2323 I also get racing heart beat and totally debilitating periods..they're still regular but have worsened esp.the mood levels which are v erratic now esp.mid cycle. I really don't want hrt as my mum had breast cancer at 60 and also we have been hoping to conceive although I know time is almost out for that one! I just wanted to get it out there really..if anyone in same position what are you doing or did you do?
OP hope you feel better x
