Menopause after total hysterectomy

8 replies

justaminutedarling · 28/04/2019 23:21

I had a full hysterectomy a couple of weeks ago and so far no signs of the menopause. I can’t find all that much info online but everything I’ve found so far suggests that menopause will be immediate. Does anyone have any experience of this? TIA Smile

full = removal of ovaries?

If so, symptoms may kick in at any time.
Was this not discussed and did your consultant not plan an HRT regime for you? That would be usual. Very poor if you had ovary removal and were not offered HRT.

If you still have your ovaries, they usually start to fail within 2-3 years regardless of age.

Yes, total as in ovaries removed. Everything I have read says that the menopause kicks in immediately but 16 days post op I haven’t noticed any changes (yet!) which is why I’m wondering if anyone has any experience of this. I don’t want to get my hopes up too much that I won’t get any symptoms but I can’t see why there would be a delay because once the ovaries have gone there’s nothing to stop menopause!

when you say everything you have read...did the consultant not discuss any of this with you? I think it's terrible you have to come to a forum and ask this. It ought to be part of your after-care.

Was HRT not discussed and started? This would be usual though some out of date drs believe women over 50 should just get on with it and not bother with replacement.

How old are you?

I’m 46. HRT isn’t an option for me as I had breast cancer in my 30s
The care at the hospital wasn’t great - every time I asked a nurse a question they more or less just shrugged! 🤷‍♀️ so I gave up...

If you do have symptoms, you might want to see an oncologist who is experienced in menopause and HRT.

There is now a lot of debate over 'no HRT after BC' and it's not black and white. Some specialists will prescribe a small , low dose estrogen.

I’ve found a great Facebook site hysterectomy sisters uk...if you happen to be on here with a similar Q looking for answers, I recommend checking them out! Lots of helpful ladies

I didn't have symptoms after mine. TAH BSO for me too.

7 years later I got abdominal pain. And a surprise ovarian cyst!

They'd left some tissue behind 🤦
