Hi I hope someone can help I went into hospital had a polyp removed it came back precancerous option were Provera or Marina coil I opted for Provere 10mg twice a day for the first 3 weeks no issues then I got spot bleeding 7 weeks on and still bleeding after talks with hospital doctor and nurse I decided to come off provera a week later and for a few days the bleeding did get heavy but now it seems to be slowing down so today I went back to the doctor and he finally gave me norethisterone 5mg 3 x daily and blood test
Now do I go back on provera or get the coil
By the way I'm 57 and been through menopause with no symptoms

Sorry you had all of this going on, but really the best person to ask is the consultant who has given you this treatment- you need to ask all these questions and have a full discussion.

I don't know why you would be offered progestogens (Provera or the Mirena coil) for a precancerous polyp- unless we assume the polyp was in your womb?

The treatment for any womb cancer or pre cancer is what you have had. It blocks the effects of any estrogen in your body which would cause the cancer to grow, so they are being careful even though the polyp was removed.

I don't quite get why the dr agreed for you to stop the provera - surely they told you why?

When anyone stops using progestogens, they get bleeding if there is a lining in the womb to be shed. This in your case, is to make sure it doesn't turn cancerous, as you are post meno- it's a form of clearing it all out.

I am sorry but I don't understand why this is not being explained, and why they have not told you how long you need treatment. You must need this treatment to help.

It's for your consultant to decide and explain to you. See your GP and ask him all of this.

I think it's important that you understand why you were given Provera.

Provera is a type of progestogen, similar to Utrogestan and Norethisterone. It's usually used as part of HRT for women on HRT. It's needed for part of each month to bring on a withdrawal bleed. This stops the womb lining building up and becoming overgrown and possibly cancerous. The reason you are being given it is not as HRT but as treatment for pre cancerous growths.

If someone like you - post menopause- has womb cancer or pre cancer, the treatment is the Mirena or Norethisterone, often for 6 months. I guess some drs prefer Provera.

You ought to have had this explained. It's not a good idea to do as the nurse says as she is not a gynaecologist and may not understand.

Bleeding is because the blood is there to come away. If the level of Provera in your system drops a little, you would bleed, and you will bleed when you stop taking it, because that's what happens. The bleeding will stop when all the lining has come away.

But that doesn't mean your treatment is over- you ought to have been told how long you would need treatment for. Ask your GP to follow up with the consultant?

Sorry just to amend that- for womb cancer the treatment would not be drugs, but you would be given drugs or the coil for a thick lining, to thin it. Is this what they found along with the polyp?

Jax8761 · 25/04/2019 18:44

I went into hospital to have the polyp removed was told after surgery everything looked very health and no further treatment would be required Then a letter came 2 weeks later saying the polyp was precancerous and arrange an appointment with my doctor for either Merena coil or Provera which I did I opted for provera knowing what I know now maybe I should have opted for the coil I have spoken to the receptionist at the hospital but can get no further than her and they suggested having the coil fitted now
I just so confused with it all different answer with different doctors each time I go
I was going to wait until July when I have an appointment at the hospital and discuss with the so called experts

It's horrible that you are getting nowhere- not really good enough.

Your GP needs to step up and follow through.

To me, the issue is that the polyp was pre cancerous so they want to block the effects of your own estrogen (you will still have a little, even post menopause) so that no more grow.

However, the fact you are bleeding a lot seems to show that you had some womb lining to come away. Normally, post meno, you would have none. Your GP needs to read the report and tell you exactly what it says and if he / she is unsure they need to contact the consultant.

Also, you need to know how long this treatment is for. It will be time-limited.

Your GP will have been told how long to treat you for.

If you can't get any sense out of them, see another dr.
