am 54 and post menopause around 4 years. had an ultrasound today and was told that there is a cyst on my rhs ovary. she didn't seem concerned (said it didn't look sinister) however i am not overly thrilled. she said she would write to my gp who would decide further action. anyone else in the same/similar situation? thanks

Yes I had exactly the same. I was your age though only post-meno by 1 year. That's several years ago. I was scanned every 4 months- they call it 'watchful waiting'. This is the advice of the RCOG. I see a private gynae so whether you would get this under the NHS I don't know, although you ought to.

Why did you have the ultrasound in the first place? Who referred you and why? This could be relevant!

i'm currently undergoing diagnostics for feeling unwell for a few months + with bloating/wind/discomfort however none of it pointed to the womb area, more stomach right under rib cage. gp did an ovarian blood test (clear) & was doing an ultrasound being thorough. i had an endoscopy a few days ago (clear, i think) & have a ct scan (pancreas etc) tomorrow.
i will see what gp (nhs) says once she has received letter re ultrasound/cyst. i see a private gyni yearly to have a smear & will pay for a scan whatever the gp says (next smear due in july).
do you still have your cyst?

My cyst cleared up after about 2 years.

The blood test C125 for ovarian cancer is very unreliable, just so you know. It's 80% accurate in women who have advanced cancer. The scan is more helpful.

They ought to be able t tell if it's benign or in any way suspicious and keep monitoring it- those are the ROCG guidelines. It also depends on the size; do you know how big it is?

The guidance is under 5cms, watchful waiting, over 5cms consider removal.

I'm not post menopausal but recently also found a cyst in my left ovary. Was scanned during a miscarriage and they found the dermoid cyst.
I've unfortunately googled some pictures of it and now I just feel so freaked out! It's got hair and teeth Envy yuk
It's just slightly smaller than 5cm so I don't know what to do now, waiting to hear from the gp but the sonography didn't sound too worried. Spoke to a gynae friend who said the same, as long as no pain, then just wait and see if it grows

happy this is totally different. when i was of 'child bearing age' i had many scans for various reasons and often had cysts all of which were fine, very normal when ovulating. i haven't had a period for over 4 years so very different/scarier tbh. i had mc years ago (no hb) and was told at the same time i had a cyst, which later disappeared. try not to worry

jingle i can't remember the size. she did say but i was so freaked (as wasn't expecting anything unusual as thought my problem was more abdominal) that i was only half listening. she didn't think it was 'large' but said gp would decide what to do. if that's not much, then i will make use of my private health as it all seems to depend where you live. i live in an area where the nhs is seriously over stretched so i never expect much hence me paying out for private'
