Mirena Coil in post-menopausal women

Hi, I need some help. I am 56 years old and a scan has revealed thickening of my uterus wall of 11mm. My Gynaecologists wants to insert a Mirena Coil after a D&C in order to prevent the thickness from coming back and also to deal with any abnormal cells if there are any. I have this nagging fear though that the side effects are not a rare as I'm being told. In the past I have been the 0.001% of the population that has had an extremely adverse reaction to a drug so even when I'm told side affects are "rare" I scoff. Gynae also advised there is a pill - mini pill it is - that also releases progestin into the system but it's nowhere near as effective. Please, are there any post menopause women out there who have had the Mirena inserted and what has been your experience with it?

I am not post menopausal but I am peri-menopausal.
I had a Mirena fitted about 7 weeks ago. I feel so much better now. I have no PMT, have had very light bleeds and my peri symptoms have decreased.

Sorry if not that relevant but wanted to let you know that the Mirena is working out good so far for me.

The Mirena is standard treatment for this. Or, you take Norethisterone at a high dose for some months.

Why did you have a scan in the first place? If it's some time since your last period ( 12 months or more) and you had bleeding, this is the right treatment. The Mirena is not forever, it's until the lining thins again.

If you are still in peri or had a period not too long ago, the 11mm might be 'normal' and show you still have ovarian activity and are due another normal period. Assume all of this was discussed?

I am post menopausal and had a bleed 17 months after my last period. That bleed was 12 months ago and nothing since and only the one. I know the Merina is the "norm" for this sort of thing however, for my own piece of mind I need to do as much research as I can. It is very hard to find and talk to post menopausal woman who have a merina for this very reason, hence my post. I am very skeptical because what doctors gloss over as being "rare" side effects for me, have turned out to be exactly what I experienced and in some cases to the extreme.

You had the bleed a year ago but have only just had a scan which showed a lining of 11mm? why did they not do anything sooner after the bleed a year ago?

I think you are over-thinking this to be honest.

If you have hyperplasia, which it sounds as if you have, there is a small risk it could become cancerous. There are several types of hyperplasia, ranging from 'simple' (meaning overgrowth but no changes) to 'complex' and 'atypical' (the latter is more of an issue.)

Have you had a biopsy to show which of these your lining is? If not, you ought to. Are you in the UK? Reason for asking is D&Cs are rare now. Normally you'd have a hysteroscopy and a biopsy, then a decision would go from there.

Depending on the results of those tests, you might need treatment. The Mirena is the advised treatment. You need to balance the possible side effects of it as a treatment against the risks of developing cancer of the lining. You can always have it removed. it's not going to be there forever, only until it's done its job.

The other thing is- if you take oral meds - the mini pill in a large dose - you are likely to get side effects off that anyway and the odds are the effects of the Mirena will be less.

JinglingHells Bells are you a post menopausal woman who has had this procedure for the reason I explained? I know this is the standard procedure for this situation BUT as I said in my first post I am wanting to talk to post menopausal women who have had this done. Yes I know D&C are rare but couldn't think of the name of what they call it now! I know about the risk of it becoming cancerous I know everything you are saying BUT I want to talk to women who have actually had it done. I would like to know their experiences.

I am post menopausal and have a Mirena. I went through very early menopause which is why I have it - it really has “levelled” me out.

Sorry for derail but I read your OP as post, as in they were going to post your coil to you Blush

My mum had one fitted at 62 for fibroid bleeding. No problems at all and it has stopped the bleeding

Muttley47 · 02/04/2019 11:04

Hi, I'm following this as I've been told to have a Mirena fitted. Though I've asked for the Jaydess which is almost half the progesterone and smaller. I'm progesterone sensitive so I'm praying I don't get migraines. A common side effect I've heard. I have other complex health issues and so I'm quite concerned. I hope you get the answers you need Serbenteg321
