A quickie - nails

In the myriad of symptoms that peri meno brings, this is a trivial one. But my nails have become very flaky. Annoyingly so.

Any supplements recommended? Not HRT, not on it, and no plans to go on it. (Saying that upfront because every thread on this board has someone saying why bother, go on HRT. Nothing against it, but not for me at this moment.)

Yes - try collagen supplements. Now they're not cheap - you need marine not bovine collagen. I'd recommend you look at Rejuvenated and Ingenious Beauty. Skinade also worth a look as is Lumity but the first two are about the best

Folic acid. I had amazing nails in pregnancy and now in Peri put two and two together, cheap as chips and amazing nails again.

JinglingHellsBells · 14/03/2019 14:13

Maybe something like Perfectil skin, hair, nails?

Flaky nails can be due to low iron and calcium so look at your diet too?

Sarcelle · 14/03/2019 18:58

@babysharkah What folic acid in my do you take?

KatyMac · 14/03/2019 20:19

Hmm I'm on Folic acid and HRT and my nails are still crumbling like anything!!

MashedSpud · 14/03/2019 20:22

Protein and iron. Eggs have biotin in them.

fikel · 14/03/2019 21:04

Mine are dreadful one nail is just split down the middle, I can see the lines tracking down the nail

Sarcelle · 21/03/2019 15:17

I have been taking folic acid as suggested for 5 days, no change to nails but then I wouldn't expect there to be after such a short time.

However, for the last few days I have just had a couple of very mild hot flushes, significantly down on the normal length and strength of them and zero night heat. Just looked up folic acid and hot flushes and there are indications that it helps with flushes. I was not taking for flushes, so had no expectation in that area, so pleasantly surprised. And so cheap, mine cost £1.05 for a couple of months supply. Thought I would mention!

Never knew nails were affected by menopause. Mine have been flaky for a couple of months now and I've had other symtpms creeping in too. Thanks for this thread! I'll be getting the folic acid asap.

Sarcelle · 24/03/2019 22:02

I am away at the moment and drinking lots of alcohol. Normally a big trigger for flushing. Nothing last night and one very mild one that lasted about 20 secs today. Significant improvement on flushing. If my nails don't improve, so be it. Just grateful that the flushing has reduced!

I am on HRT and my nails are still awful but i had thought it was a shellac issue (i get a gel manicure twice a year). Do i need ot add crap nails to my increasing list of issues?!!

Sarcelle · 28/03/2019 18:20

My nails have always been good. The last few months they have been so weak and flaky. I have not been wearing polish so can't blame it on harsh nail polish remover. So, yes, dodgy nails are one of the many meno symptoms.
