Mirena coil to manage v heavy periods in 52 year old?

I have had very heavy periods all my life but for the last couple of years I now experience flooding and prolonged periods. I am anaemic and have been given iron tablets.

Last week I had a scan that showed I had a fibroid and so the gynae has booked me in for a hysteroscopy and insertion of Mirena.
Thing is I just feel so nervous about this. I am terrible with internal examinations as I have vaginismus. I told the gynae this and she thinks I will be fine and that the Mirena will resolve the flooding so it will be worth it.

Aren't there any progesterone gels that would have the same impact as the Mirena?

Does anyone have any positive experiences of Mirena in this situation and any tips for coping with the hysteroscopy and Mirena insertion.
I need some reassurance as I am having a major panic about it all now.
Thanks

PositiveDiscipline There have been many threads on MN about the Mirena, mostly negative. It surprises me how many people are put off because of a bit of pain on fitting when the benefits are so life changing.

It was a bit uncomfortable but it has made a massive difference to me. I'm feeling loads better and happier now.

Those with positive stories are off biking and rollerblading in their white pants and not on here.

I've just posted about my own experience in AIBU, I wish I'd seen this first. Nearly 50, had Mirena inserted two weeks ago. 3 days ago I started with continuous flooding and huge clots. Am currently changing pad and tampax every 30 mins to an hour. GP couldn't examine me yesterday due to blood. I've been given meds to stem it so that I can have an examination tomorrow. I have had two previous Mirena's with no issues whatsoever. I wish I'd left my copper coil in. Had no problems with that. Not sure what to do but thought I was at the end of my menopause and this would see me through. OP, I would still recommend given previous experiences but I couldn't tell you how you might react. I didn't anticipate this!

But the Mirena you had put in 2 weeks ago is not going to stop the build up from weeks ago or control this period.
That had to come out sometime. The Mirena as you know releases progestogen very very slowly and lasts for 5 years. hat you have now is a typical peri period!

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/03/2019 14:39

@JinglingHellsBells Yes I know you're right. I've had peri periods for years now but nowhere near like this...and I suspect it's because of the long gap since I last had one. I am in so much pain, have not had pain like this in a very very long time and I have a high threshold! Next step is to see if it's expelled otherwise I will perservere because I am sure it will settle eventually.

Are you taking ibuprofen every 4 hrs, or Feminax? It helps the bleeding. Put your feet up and take it easy.Flowers

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/03/2019 14:53

@JinglingHellsBells Yes I am taking painkillers, I will go and buy some Feminax actually, I had forgotten about that. I will do my best but I have an 8 year old ASD DS who gives me not a moments peace Grin. It'll be OK! I think this episode has just frightened me. I'll get some iron supplements too. Thanks for your kindness Smile

You can also get CycloF tranexamic acid over the counter at Boots to reduce the flow.
