Contraception

NickyNora · 08/03/2019 00:08

My periods stopped 19 months ago, I was 43.

I'm in a new relationship, do I need contraception?

Or a a year has passed, am I ok to not use any?

I'm on HRT.

Thanks

Yes.

If you are under 50 you have to have 2 years period-free.

It is possible women with early menopause can have ovarian function after a break.

Nobody's going to say you're OK not to use contraception.

What's the worst thing that could happen?

JinglingHellsBells · 08/03/2019 08:18

www.womens-health-concern.org/help-and-advice/factsheets/contraception-older-woman/

Halfway down the page 'When to stop contraception'.

55! OMG I'm pretty shocked.
The worse that will happen is pregnancy.

Realistically, I'm very unlikely to concieve as i haven't used contraception for years...

Single parent to 4 dc, youngest is 4 so any more dc would be a massive strain.

I'm wondering if i should change from Utrogestan to a mini Pill & carry on with the Estrogel & Testosterone.

Fertility rates are a combination of both partners- a man might have low sperm count and that could be reason for no conception. Another might have super sperm Grin

Also the ovaries can get really excitable as they run out of eggs and start chucking out the last follicles as is there is no tomorrow- which there isn't for the ovary!

Play it safe.

SparkiePolastri · 08/03/2019 17:46

Unlikely to conceive isn't the same as unable to conceive. Plus everything else Jingling said.

If I had 4DC and was your (my) age, it couldn't be less of a no-brainer.

JinglingHellsBells · 08/03/2019 18:02

Nicky- women who have early menopauses as you have are more likely to have a resumption of periods / ovarian function than older women.

You and your then partner were fertile as you have 4 DCs and the last one conceived when you were 39. I'd not be so sure there are no eggs left at 43 - no way!

NickyNora · 08/03/2019 20:53

I am 45 now.
I didn't say i am not going to use contraception. I can't afford another child.

In my last post i did ask if i could use the mini Pill instead of Utrogestan.
I don't want a Mirena Coil.
I don't want to stop my current HRT.

In theory you could use the mini pill but I'm not sure if your GP would be able to prescribe.

I was offered the mini pill as an alternative to Norethisterone (I decided to go with Utrogestan) but that was by my consultant (not NHS.)

There is no direct 'swap' between Utrogestan and the mini pill because a) it's not licensed for HRT and b) the dose will vary depending on the type of mini pill- it's not just 1 pill a day- you need more than that to get the correct ratio.

If you have a clued-up GP it's worth asking, but I'd not be too optimistic.

You don't have to use contraception to 55! The rule is for 2 years if you are under 50 (after your last period) though on HRT you will be having withdrawal bleeds (assume?) so you may not know when your last natural period was anyway.

Condoms? Snip for the guy?

NickyNora · 09/03/2019 19:53

My GPs useless. I attend a Menopause Clinic.

Its a new relationship so vasectomy isn't an option. Will be using condoms anyway. I've only a few months to go til my 2 year mark.

I've had 2 heavy bleeds since being on HRT when the Utrogestan wasn't prescribed frequently enough. Bleeds now very light, barely need more then a liner.
