Help me with super heavy bleeding - padding ideas

Raybay · 24/02/2019 18:24

Hi, I am bleeding really heavily today, a pad last a max of 20 mins. This isn't the first time in recent months but it is the worst. Husband went out looking for maternity pads to no avail. I am thinking what the heck to do overnight tonight. My first thoughts are a black bin bag with holes for my legs with an old towel stuffed inside. Anyone got advice/experience so could offer solutions? Sorry to gross folk out but I'm getting worried. Thank you for reading

OMFG you poor thing. What does your GP say about this?

Footle · 24/02/2019 19:38

Aren't you supposed to at least ring 111 for advice if you're using more than one pad per hour for a few hours?

Fatted · 24/02/2019 19:40

Tampon with a pad perhaps?

Nousernameforme · 24/02/2019 19:44

Yeah i would phone 111. You say it can be quite bad but this is thr worst so its not normal for you i think you should get seen

PoshPenny · 24/02/2019 19:46

Yes phone 111 because that's HEAVY. You need some help to manage that kind of bleeding, you'll end up anaemic otherwise. There are various options. I have read on here that incontinence pads are good. They do pull ups as well, which could be worth a try?

bobisbored · 24/02/2019 19:48

You need some tranexamic acid. My friend was prescribed some recently for heavy periods. I would see your GP ASAP.

Wowzel · 24/02/2019 19:49

You need to see a doctor.

visitorthedog · 24/02/2019 19:50

Yes, this sounds in danger territory, 111.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 24/02/2019 19:52

Tena or bladder weakness pants.

But also call 111. That level of bleeding is insane.

Thisisthelaststraw · 24/02/2019 19:57

Ponstan (but check with medical provider before taking to ensure no contraindications with medical history/regular meds). Take an over the counter iron tablet. I use Galfer but not sure if it’d be available where you are.

I used to use the largest size children’s pullups. Tear down each side. Now I’ve learned Tesco stock unisex adult pullups for incontenance (so?) in several different sizes. Hope you feel better soon.

Also, visit gp to have haemoglobin level checked.

Spongeface · 24/02/2019 20:15

Second incontinence pads. You can't walk in them but you won't care about bleeding. Tampon, inco pad and a towel. It's horrible isn't it.

MadameJosephine · 24/02/2019 20:42

If you’re soaking a pad in 20 minutes you need medical attention. I’d ring 111 for advice but wouldn’t be surprised if they send you to A&E with that amount of bleeding

Raybay · 24/02/2019 22:12

Thanks everyone, I did phone 111 late morning and they firstly advised ambulance then when I said no way, they advised A&E, trouble is hospital is at least 30 mins away, I'd be flooding by the time I got there let alone the waiting. Eventually a call from a doc who arranged a prescription for Traxenamic. I had taken some out of date ones earlier in a hope they would work. Worse than the actual blood is the massive clots and amount of them. Husband collected prescription and I've taken two sets of them. I am coping but seriously concerned of the bedding arrangements. It's too late now but I'll investigate adult nappies for next month. I have got some tena type pads but worried they are meant for urine and won't absorb blood.

Probably try plastic on top of bed sheet, thick towels and then dark fleece blanket on top of me. Our 100% cotton white bedding wouldnt cope with the fallout....

Going to call GP tomorrow as need help. On call GP said to check hormone levels, that I'm probably peri menopausal and will go on for up to 2yr.... Amusingly I have a hormone coil fitted for 3yrs that's in the past helped with heavy bleeding. October 2018 I bled for 3.5weeks and this is now the 3rd time this clot passing has happened since then, so not every period, so I just thought it was one of those things. It has calmed down since about 7pm. There's only so much lining that my body has made in the last 4 weeks so the end is nigh I bloody hope... Thanks everyone

There are things that can be done for flooding. I had it once, while abroad, and traxenamic acid and massive doses of ipubrofen and incontinence pads got me home.

GP gave me iron tablets and put me back on the pill, I’m now on hrt. When my sister had it she had a Mirena. Mum had a d&c. Go back to your GP.

LucyFox · 24/02/2019 22:24

Tightish fitting underwear with sanitary pad, then another pair (with pad) over the top to catch any leaks, then pjs or leggings. For the bed, Waterproof mattress cover (got an old shower curtain? Less rustley than a bin bag!) double layer of towels & dark fleece blanket under you - fleece is amazing stuff & you’d be amazed what it will absorb.
Don’t worry too much - you probably won’t sleep great anyway so will get up 3 times in the night! Wink

AuditAngel · 24/02/2019 22:32

For another time, also consider the disposable bed matts to help protect the mattress

MadameJosephine · 24/02/2019 23:47

Tranexamic avid and mefanamic acod given together have been shown to significantly reduce heavy bleeding, perhaps you could discuss that with your GP but honestly you’d be better going to A&E because they could get the gynae team to come and review you

Footle · 25/02/2019 06:33

Why no ambulance to a&e? Just because MN is full of weirdos who think it's off limits for anyone they haven't personally authorised, doesn't mean you're justified in haemorrhaging all on your own!

Fairylea · 25/02/2019 06:35

They wouldn’t have wanted to send an ambulance unless you needed one.

You need to go to a and e to be checked out.

TryingToBeCheery · 25/02/2019 09:07

I've had really heavy periods all my life and more recently flooding as part of the peri-menopause.

So, how come it took till I was 49 for a doctor to suggest the Mirena Coil???

OP, you need to get that stopped ASAP so it doesn't happen again.

Snog · 25/02/2019 18:50

Hope you are OK OP

Rade · 25/02/2019 19:13

When you say hormone coil do you mean a Mirena? I wasn't nearly as bad as you but Mirena coil changed my life and I had one until I was past menopause.

Hagird · 25/02/2019 19:22

I am on Day 30 of heavy (heaviest day of perimenopausal, fibroidy, period type) bleeding. It has been hideous but I am no longer fazed by 90 minute wake ups throughout the night. I have resorted to tena pants. Urine is far less viscous so I figured (correctly) they would manage just fine. They did. I have also used disposable nappy changing pads (in bed) and layering pants with st's. Folded bath towels too.

It's shit OP and you have my sympathy. I cannot take tranexamic acid so am on Progesterone (mini pill) which doesn't seem to be helping but now taking Ponstan as well which might...Or maybe my body will just get fed up with spilling so much blood. Last week I realised I was out of breath going up the stairs so thought maybe that was anaemia so I have been having a Spatone a day and feel fine since.

Meretricious · 26/02/2019 07:54

hagird you’ll need more than spa tone. Anaemia makes bleeding worse. Get to a doctor!

Beth45red · 06/03/2019 18:27

I've appropriated my 4 year old's plastic sheets in case of leak g
